We had the good fortune of connecting with Raven Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Raven, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting Material Gurl Decor was driven by a passion for creating and a desire to share that passion with others. I initially began by creating balloon garlands for friends and family gatherings. This hobby turned into a realization that there was a market for unique and high-quality party decorations. I saw an opportunity to take my skills and creativity and turn them into a business that could bring joy to others’ celebrations.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am most proud of how much I’ve grown this business in such a short amount of time. My technique and styling methods are better and it shows in my work. I have acquired a list of loyal customers who have been with me from the beginning and adapted to my business changes. I have gotten comfortable with putting myself out there, because you never know who could be a potential customer.

I would like the world to know that even though my business is small, I am still professional. I’ve personally put things in place to make sure my clients are able to book hassle and stress free. I want my clients experience to be one where they remember how seamless the booking and payment process was, how I effectively communicated, and how the quality of the work delivered matched the price. Being a small business isn’t easy, but once I started taking myself seriously, others did too.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout my family (my parents, boyfriend, sisters, grandmother, and my son). They have been so supportive throughout this journey and transition for me. They were the ones who pushed me to take my love for balloons from a hobby to a business, They let me practice and create balloon garlands for our family gatherings and even pitched in on jobs here and there.
