Meet Jeffrey Tadlock | Landscape Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeffrey Tadlock and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a landscape photographer based in central Ohio. I frequently practice my landscape photography craft in area metro parks and make regular visits to Hocking Hills State Park and surrounding areas – one of my favorite places to photograph.
I also travel frequently to West Virginia to photograph the landscapes there as well, having made five trips there in just over the past year or so. I have also had the opportunity to travel west several times and photograph in the Rocky Mountain National Park, Death Valley, and various parts of Arizona.
I also lead landscape photography workshops in the region, ranging from one-day workshops to multi-day workshops. At these workshops, I help guide people to amazing locations and help teach them the basics of landscape photography – from camera usage to composition to editing photos.
And finally, I also have a YouTube channel that focused on landscape photography education. On my channel, I talk in depth on various techniques to help other photographers improve their own photography.
I started photography back in the film days, photographing landscapes, various action sports, and such. I always carried a camera on backpacking trips, documenting the trip and taking photos.
Eventually, I took a long break from photography but returned to photography seriously about eight years ago. Over the course of the past three years, I have put a lot of focus and energy into the landscape photography genre, as that is the near-perfect mix of creative, technical, and being outdoors in nature.
If there is any lesson to be learned from my path, it is to follow your passion. When I returned to photography, I dabbled in all types of photography. If someone offered to pay me, I would photograph it!
But what I’ve learned is that if you follow your passion, it makes everything so much easier. It makes the work that needs to go into it much more fun. It makes social media easier because you are more genuine, it makes sending regular newsletter emails easier, and it makes content creation so much easier.
There have certainly been challenges along the way. I think anything worth doing has challenges. Sometimes, you have a perfect photo in mind and the weather doesn’t cooperate or maybe you have a print sale and things don’t sell as well as expected.
You just have to roll through those challenges and keep at it, keep moving forward. This ties into my lesson above, if you do what you have passion for, it makes the process overall much more enjoyable and makes moving forward through these challenges a little less difficult.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend were in town visiting, the first thing we’d do on the first evening they were here is head to one of the local area restaurants, Grove City Brewing Company. It’s a great place with good food and local craft brews.
The next day, we’d get an early start and head out to Hocking Hills State Park for some landscape photography. We’d hit some of the main areas like Upper Falls, Lower Falls, and Ash Cave and take some time to enjoy those spots.
From there, it would be to the Inn at Cedar Falls for some delicious lunch, one of my favorites in that area. In fact, if you attend one of my landscape photography workshops, I always do their boxed lunch that we pick up while changing locations in the park.
The rest of the afternoon, we’d do some more photography before getting pizza at Pizza Crossing in Logan, Ohio and then heading back to the Columbus area.
The next day would be pretty relaxed, most likely keeping things simple and just visiting one of the local metro parks – maybe Scioto Grove Metro Park or Battelle Darby Metro Park.
Over the course of the next few days, we’d likely take in the Columbus Art Museum, maybe catch a concert at the Newport Music Hall and fit in some meals at some of my favorite area restaurants. Something like South Village Grille in German Village and Milestone 229 in downtown Columbus by the river. Both great experiences.
It is hard to narrow it down with all the things to do in the Columbus area!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my family, Lauren, Alexander, and Raven. They have been supportive of the travel for photography trips, the workshops, and the time it takes to record and create content.
