We had the good fortune of connecting with Olivia Boyd and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Olivia, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
My work life balance has definitely changed. I gave up one type of busy for another type of busy. I have more free time to do what I want but I wear so many hats now as a business owner. I have to do marketing, share content, order supplies, taxes, reporting and bookkeeping. It can be a lot and take endless amounts of time. I think balance is having time for things and people you love and enjoy. Loving your career is priceless but to avoid burnout, it’s always great to have healthy outlets to avoid this. I love to travel, spend time with friends and family, or just stay home and watch one of my favorite shows. One continuous goal I try to keep up with is taking care of myself. I love to exercise, have a nice massage or facial, or just doing nothing sometimes feels amazing. Closing the laptop, putting away the phone, and spending time with yourself is so vital. Balance is unique to everyone but I try to mentally plan out my week so I can stay on top of priorities while creating time to have for activities or relaxation.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been doing nails for almost four years now. My intention after graduating was always to do hair but that has not panned out the way I would have hoped. I am discovering that it’s okay to not do it all, especially if it does not provide a sustainable income. I want to remain versatile but not overwhelm myself or clients with too many options. I am proud of my willingness to keep going despite any challenges. The biggest lesson I’ve learned (and am still learning) is to think about decisions from a business standpoint and not personally. I saw a stylist on Instagram recently discussing this. She said you have to become two different people: your business self and your personal self. Being in this industry, it can be hard to maintain this mindset because we are all a client/customer to someone. I think it’s knowing when to shift my mindset and understanding how this can affect what I want my outcome to be.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love this question! First off, I am a HUGE foodie. Anyone who knows me knows this.

I’m from Dayton, Ohio and my two best friends from there come up to visit pretty often. I always make it my mission to take them somewhere with a good vibe and good food/drinks. Columbus is such a fun city with endless options! Some of my favorite spots for food would be The Walrus, (gotta have the lobster mac), Fox’s Bagel and Deli, One Line Coffee, Fox in the Snow, The 1126 restaurant, and countless others. Cameron Mitchell is a big name here so we’ve been to a few of his restaurants and had great experiences. It really depends on our mood but I usually take them out to the Short North or downtown. There’s also a lot to do at Easton and a ton of festivals over the summer and for the holidays so I try to stay up to date with what’s going on. I would recommend any of our rooftop bars for cocktails and anywhere with a dance floor because we all love to dance.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give credit to my amazing mom and my partner. They have both been crucial pieces to my success. Whether it’s brainstorming ideas, marketing strategies, or assisting with supplies, they are always there for whatever I need.
