Meet Shannon Braxton | Floral Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shannon Braxton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shannon, why did you pursue a creative career?
My mom raised my older brother and I as a single parent. She was a barber/hair dresser so she also has a creative side. She kept a tidy home and loved to redecorate often. There was a large department store in the 80’s called Harts and we used to go shopping there for faux flowers for the house and various other things. Somehow we figured out that I had the ability to recreate things for our home for a fraction of the cost a Florist would charge. And so it began! Fast forward to high school, I took a 4 year floral art and design class and I excelled and was given to opportunity to work for a florist when I was 15 and I have been in a flower shop since!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My ability to connect with my customers and fulfill their needs is what sets me apart from others. I not only have a passion for floral art, I also have a passion for people. Most kids like to color or paint, I liked to make flower arrangements!
There is a saying “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life” so while I wouldn’t say it’s been easy to get to where I am, it’s been so fulfilling and most days it doesn’t feel like work. My love of the craft overcomes the exhaustion and challenges.
The lessons I’ve learned along the way are to not sweat the small things! Consistency is key, there will be highs and lows but if I remain consistent things work out for the best. Also, I’ve learned to not sell myself short. my customers don’t continue to come back because I have the least expensive flowers. They return for the quality of product and they know their order will meet or exceed their expectations.
I want the world to know I appreciate being a part of the occasion, I’ve been in the floral industry for over 30 years and I still get so excited when I am chosen to be the florist to help celebrate a special day!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I think we would visit Franklin park conservatory and the Columbus zoo, possibly take a trip to old mans cave. The Funny Bone @ Easton is always a great time as well.
We would visit Bubbly Food Hall for drinks and dinner. They have a wide variety of authentic cuisine to chose from and an amazing wine tasting scheduled each week.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom deserves credit and recognition! She was always very supportive and my biggest cheerleader for my creativity!
