We had the good fortune of connecting with KaTanya Brewer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi KaTanya, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
It’s starts with passion. I simply love music and lyrics that tell a story I can relate to. This reminds me that were are more alike than we are different as I listen and/or sing to each word.

My performance style is interactive and to engage with an audience you have to bold, exciting and entertaining. That comes naturally to me and people love it. I have grandparents slow dance to songs of their generation and even pass the microphone to a singer in the audience giving them their moment.

Sidewalk Serenades sometimes bless people with free concerts for the love of music. This can often cause people to stop and stare because they hear a song that takes them back to a familiar place in time. Then hear a vocalist who’s singing because she’s been there too. From there you can hear the passion in the vocals.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I came across my current role simply by reaching out to someone I once sang for. They saw me performing outdoors and we connected from there on Social Media. I was looking for a new role professionally and decided to reach out to her using the Facebook messenger feature, not realizing they were the Executive Director over the entire non-profit organization.

Now professionally my job title is a Service Coordinator, I assist individuals with mental health and/or drug/alcohol issues who have experienced homelessness and now live in supportive housing.

I have the opportunity to build a community of neighbors and introduce folks to fun/sober activities around the city. This fits me to the T because of my passion for people and ability to engage with any and all people regardless of their background.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
THE Short North Arts District is a must!

I support all things local, so waking up to go to the Short North and hit a local coffee shop like “One Line Coffee” to grab a honey latte.

Then, off to North Market to visit and enjoy any cuisine of our liking at the moment. I might be feeling vegan nuggets at “Hot Chicken Takeover” while they want some Indian cuisine from “Flavors of India”.

Since it’s opening I’ve enjoyed the atmosphere of “Budd Dairy” and have been hired to perform there several times, but the “Thursday Karaoke Night” is a must too!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m deeply grateful to share that I would not be where I am today, experiencing the joys in life through music without the influences, help and support of The Short North Arts District (SNAD) and The Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC).
