We had the good fortune of connecting with Keira Chatman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Keira, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
In my earlier years, I often embraced risk, driven by my eagerness to accomplish goals. However, as I’ve matured, I’ve come to understand the importance of thorough planning in decision-making. Timing is crucial, but so is evaluating the potential outcomes of each move as an entrepreneur. It’s about weighing the pros and cons meticulously and being prepared to adapt within the risks undertaken. This means not only being prepared for unforeseen challenges, but also willing to adjust our strategies in response to changing circumstances. Taking calculated risks is what has provided me with the most success.

What should our readers know about your business?
Legacy House 614 has been a lifelong dream for me – a space where my creativity intersects with my passion for revitalizing historic downtown Columbus. Growing up in Columbus, I’ve always felt a deep connection to the community and its people. The idea of a multipurpose space filled with love and history has been with me since childhood. As a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty for 5 years, I stumbled upon the perfect property. Though I was unsure of how I would use the property, I knew it held immense potential for my family’s future. Acquiring and renovating the space was a labor of love. I meticulously planned layouts, supervised contractors, selected every piece of furniture, and personally funded the venture, which fills me with immense pride. Legacy House is a testament to dedication, with every detail meticulously crafted. It is dedicated to my late grandparents, and it serves as a daily reminder of their influence and a hopeful vision for generations to come.

Legacy House 614 stands out for its versatility, featuring an event venue on the first floor and Airbnb or short-term rental on the second and third floors, available for rent individually or as a whole. It draws inspiration from my heritage in New Orleans, my new years spent living in Brooklyn, NY, and a passion for vintage music, style, luxury and comfort. The interior design exudes a unique blend of cultural influences and contemporary flair.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Whenever I have guests, I make it a point to introduce them to the vibrant scene of the Short North. I think this is the first introduction to Columbus being a city that’s more than meets the eye. Rooftops are my favorite, so we’d definitely spend some time at Mandrake or Stories on High. I also appreciate the sophisticated vibe of Moxy and Fireproof is one of my favorite places for cocktails.

Another one of my favorite hangouts in now Franklinton. Being a creative, I love being in the hub of creativity. The vibrant art galleries, captivating murals, lively flea markets, and spontaneous Friday events all contribute to its unique charm. It’s an inspiring environment where creativity thrives and the energy is contagious. The Junto has become the highlight of that area along with the river walk located in front of COSI.

Concluding the tour, I always make sure to take visitors through Olde Towne East and King- Lincoln Bronzeville, my childhood and current stomping grounds. These areas have a special place in my heart, and it excites me to show how its rich history and culture have been immersed with cozy coffee shops like Upper Cup and new restaurants like Waves Bar. Not to mention, there are always great events being held at MPACC Box Park, Mayme Moore Park and Franklin Park.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m grateful for the profound influence of several key figures in my life. Firstly, my mother exemplified true entrepreneurship, leading by example and shaping my path. Secondly, my grandmother’s grace and steadfastness have been foundational in my journey. Lastly, each organization I’ve been part of has provided valuable lessons in hard work and seizing opportunities.
