We had the good fortune of connecting with Rew Coleman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rew, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My passion for fashion accessories started as a child. I always carried a purse and loved to accessorize with bracelets and earrings. After years of getting compliments on my fashion choices in high school and college, I started to research how to start a business. At the time (early 2000’s) it seemed like something that was unattainable for me. I didn’t know any entrepreneurs to get advice from and I became fearful to start. After 8 years of having this idea in the back of my mind in March 2019 I finally Started Essential Things Co.

What should our readers know about your business?
What sets ETC apart from other accessory businesses is our unique and eccentric earring selection. I truly get a sense of joy from seeing someone in public that stops me and calls me the ‘Earring Lady’ or someone who tags me on social showing a bag or jewelry they purchased from me. My biggest barriers are time management and content creation. i have to find balance and time in all aspects of life. I am a licensed health insurance professional by day. I have been jugging growing a business, corporate career, and family and it can be stressful at times. Utilizing a calendar and planning time t do every task helps me accomplish daily and weekly goals.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Spring/Summer in Cincinnati are best. I would start with dinner and drinks downtown at Soul Secrets or Lou Vino. the free music concert at Washington Park.. Followed by a night cap along the Ohio River, maybe Newport on the Levee..

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My village is amazing and there are a number of people who have contributed to the success of ETC. First off, my husband. I am a spontaneous busy body and often take on events and project that help my business grow and sometimes that takes me away from my kids and husband. He is super supportive and allows my the be the creative social butterfly i am. Throughout these 5 years I have relied on some content and branding coaches such as Morgan A Owens, Ashley Amber, and Mymy Jones. these women are local serial entrepreneurs who have helped me tremendously with strategy and understanding social media. I have also utilized services through our local African American Chamber of Commerce.
