We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Burns and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melissa, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The success of my business truly is 5 star customer service. My customers aren’t just customers, they are family. I get to know them, their family and invest in building that relationship. We always welcome farm visits as we can our customers to know where their food is coming from. Along with customer service and delivering a great product, we give back to the community!

Know your farmer. Know your food

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am proud of how much growth has happened in the past 2 years. It started as a little fun side gig and it grew into my full time job that allows me to be home with my kiddos. I have always had cattle growing up, and my oldest brother has a feedlot of around 200 head he runs, I am much smaller then that, however I ask questions!

Marketing was/ is challenge. Word of mouth is everything, especially in a small community that is running at a rapid pace. I try my best to get my name out there and continue to hustle daily while delivering an amazing product. There is room for everyone in the meat business, it is just setting yourself apart from the rest- how am I different? I take my customers with me in my daily life basically! I involve my children in a lot of things and I share a lot that we are doing on the farm (I need to do more of this too actually)
We don’t just raise Cattle, we also grain farm, buy/sell equipment, 4H advisors, Farm Bureau.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh there are so many places in our beautiful town of Marysville First, they would start there morning with a farm workout.
Lifting of the straw bales, tossing the feed sacks, battle ropes with log chains, And running the sprints (Did I mention I am a Personal Trainer) – days start around 415/430am 🙂
We would then go journey to the barn to feed!
IF we don’t make a farm fresh breakfast of our ( Burns Beef) sausage links and eggs with locally raised sourdough bread we would journey to:
Kitschen Bakery or the Flour Barn (these 2 places are my favorite!)
If the farmers market is going on we would have to go there too!
If the greenhouses are open we would then have to go check out Scheiderer Farms and then Iron Threads !
Then venture to the famous Columbus Zoo of course as we are 25 minutes from there !

For dinner I am one for one of our Burns Beef Filets with produce we would pick up from the farmers market BUT if going out, I feel like Leons and Half pint are great choices!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Honestly I credit where I am today to my family and my community. I grew up with a very driven and motivated family. We are all raised waking up early and going to the barn to feed our cattle. We were very involved with showing cattle as well. I also married a very self motivated, very disciplined man, Ron. He pushes me to be better daily! We have 2 boys so instilling a strong work ethic at a young age is very important to us. I cant forgot our community, they truly are the driving force into our growth, without them Burns Beef would be 1 small freezer on a trailer. Now we are 4 large freezer, just set up a website for online ordering and we are able to give back to the schools and different organizations in the way that we do.
