Meet Ashley Garner | Marketing Manager & Event Strategist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Garner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, how do you think about risk?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without taking risks, and I don’t believe I can reach where I want to be in the future without pushing myself outside of my comfort zone to take even greater risks.
A decade ago, I faced a pivotal moment: joining a tech start up with just four of us onboard. The idea of being the lone marketer for a groundbreaking software and brand launch was thrilling yet nerve-racking, especially being fresh out of college. And on top of that, the looming relocation of the company from Ohio to Texas added another layer of uncertainty, demanding that I prove my worth within a mere four months. But, in that mix of fear and excitement, I saw a chance to grow, so I took the leap of faith.
That one bold move led me down an incredible path, eventually landing me my dream job in Seattle at a top fortune 500 company. Along the way, I’ve embraced new roles in new places throughout the country, understanding that progress means embracing the unknown. But it’s not just about career moves; it’s about pushing boundaries in every aspect of life, constantly seeking growth and impact.
Today, I am challenging myself to dive deeper into the world of investing which has exposed me to a new way of thinking and level of risk taking. It’s a challenge I’m excited to take on. Stepping out of my comfort zone has been scary, but it’s also exhilarating. It’s about that thrill of discovery and the belief that each risk taken brings me closer to where I want to be, both personally and professionally.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career journey starts during my time at The Ohio State University, where I had the privilege of working alongside head football coach Jim Tressel and landing an internship with the Athletics Communication Department. These experiences exposed me to professionals from esteemed companies like ESPN and equipped me with invaluable skills, increasing my confidence as a business professional.
Upon graduation, I dove into the corporate world to find my niche, eventually finding myself in the technology space. Immersed in this fast-paced environment, I discovered a world where the impossible became possible and where I could align myself with companies making a tangible impact on the world.
My first role in the tech industry was with ShipperHQ, a startup where I developed my scrappiness and creativity, particularly in the world of event strategy and planning. Eager for new challenges, I decided to further my business acumen by pursuing an MBA. Little did I know, this pursuit would be a thrilling adventure. I held an internship at General Motors, participated in transformative study abroad experiences, and met inspiring individuals.
After graduating, I found myself at my dream company, Microsoft, which I fell in love with during the recruitment process. As a Product Marketing Manager, I navigated the unprecedented challenges of organizing US events during the pandemic. Despite the obstacles, I took the opportunity to innovate and drive business outcomes through creative virtual and eventually in-person experiences, including unforgettable ventures at the Super Bowl and in Hawaii.
Now, I’ve begun a new chapter at Brightspeed, a telecommunications company, where I’m tasked with creating structure and supporting business efforts as we carve out our presence in the internet space. What excites me most about this role is the opportunity to provide reliable service to individuals and businesses who may have previously lacked access.
Throughout my career, one lesson has remained constant: my greatest fulfillment comes from knowing that my work is making a difference in the lives of others. This ethos continues to drive me forward, infusing purpose into every endeavor.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve lived in both Cleveland and Columbus, so I will offer my favorite spots for both!
If you were to visit Columbus, I would recommend staying in the Short North. There are great restaurants and things to do in the area. If you happen to be there the first Saturday of the month, you should check out Gallery Hop. You should hang out and shop at Easton, a beautiful shopping center. And, your visit wouldn’t be complete without stopping by Ohio State campus for a football or basketball game. Be sure to say hello to our mascot Brutus for me!
If you were to visit Cleveland, I would recommend going to our legendary art museum and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We also have professional sports teams if you want to watch the Cleveland Browns, Gardians, or Cavs in action.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to give a shoutout to “Shoe Dog” by Phil Knight. This book holds a special place in my heart, not only because of my loyalty to the Nike brand, but also because of its profound impact on my journey in the workforce.
It’s about Phil Knight’s journey and the grit, sweat, and tears it took to build Nike into the powerhouse it is today.
What I love most about “Shoe Dog” is its honesty. It doesn’t sugarcoat the challenges of entrepreneurship. Instead, it celebrates the messy, imperfect path to success, reminding me that it’s okay to stumble along the way.
I first stumbled upon “Shoe Dog” early in my career, and it’s been my go-to whenever I need inspiration. Whether I’m facing a tough day at work or contemplating a new venture, it reminds me to keep pushing forward.
