We had the good fortune of connecting with Todd Reed and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Todd, what do you attribute your success to?
I really think that the biggest factor behind the success of STEAMPOWERED SFX PRODUCTIONS, is that we are not scared to take on any projects. When we started out, we were trying out a lot of different marketing angles to get the name out there. Anything from, movie make up FX, set design/commercial creative interiors, fanart etc. Now, 6years later, we find that we are still doing all of these types of artworks, but on a much larger scale. 2024 has really been our year to exercise our creative muscles, and really show the world that we can do absolutely anything, and any scale, that a client wants us to fabricate.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We are really trying to reach a wider audience this year, more than in previous years. When we started out fabricating sets and props for haunted attractions, I believe that it boxed us in with other “haunted house” Fabricators.
This year, I believe we are successfully changing our narrative. In January we designed the album cover for the legendary rock ‘n’ roll band “The Gods”.
We fabricated 9‘ x 7‘ “Angel Sculptures” for the red carpet at the Annual CCAD fashion show at the famous Kemba Live amphitheater.
We are currently doing special effects make up on our fifth film production this year.
Currently, we are designing three-dimensional props for the second annual “Season of Celebration” at The number one children’s science museum in the nation COSI, here in Columbus.
Also, we have officially begun construction at NATIONAL TRAILS RACEWAY, For our 2025 grand opening of “HUNGER HOLLER FARMS”, Our highly anticipated, interactive, atomic age, horror themed Halloween attraction!
In 2022, we begin construction on the our horror themed attraction in Mansfield Ohio.
Last year we came to the conclusion that their local government was mired in “good ol’boy politics“, in bed with A company with a similar business model, who was very intimidated by our presence. Our inability to convince the building codes/Permits Inspector, Lead us to dismantling the entire exhibit. We were on the brink of our business collapsing, But refused to suffer the agony of defeat. We just rolled up our sleeves and changed our approach, and business model. Through perseverance and good old, “American Grit”, we managed to claw our way back.
We have applied for all kinds of art grants, but unfortunately, have never been awarded one cent, in spite of our relevance and ongoing contributions to the Columbus arts scene. Instead of letting these kind of setbacks destroy us, it actually motivates us to work even harder to prove the naysayers and “Gatekeepers” wrong!
Dreams are not an easy thing to achieve,
You have to fight a lot of battles until you can achieve your victory! Don’t be surprised when you realize that there are an overwhelmingly higher amount of people who want to see you fail, compared to the amount of people who want to see you succeed. I honestly believe that if you just stay positive, believe in your dream, overcome all of these obstacles, and be grateful for the people who support you…
You will emerge the success story that you always wanted to become.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would keep it 100% locally owned and operated.
1st I’d take them to the legendary “National Trails Raceway”, to see some epic drag racing at a historical landmark Racetrack.
And of course, while we are there grab some tickets to “ Hunger Holler Farms” on the back of the property, for the absolute, most unique interactive horror themed experience in the US.
2nd I would take them to get a tattoo at the world famous RED TREE TATTOO GALLERY, also home of the WEIRD WONDERFUL WORLD art bazaar and music festival.
3rd we would go to “The Church of the Sparkling Unicorn” for “TRAMA”, the largest and most unique Halloween/Fetish Party in the state! Hosted by Evolved Body Art

Then COSI (The number one children’s museum in the United States)

The Columbus Zoo (The number one zoo in the United States)

The Columbus Metropolitan Library “main branch downtown“(The number one library in the United States)

And of course, Eat at TOMMY’s Pizza In upper Arlington!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife Tonya Reed has been my number one, inspiration, helper, support system, and cheerleader through my entire journey. She was there when it all began, and has always pushed and/or promoted me like no one else. It is amazing the effect that the perfect partner in life can have on someone’s career. It can literally make or break you. But in my particular case, she has made me feel like King Kong in this industry.
I would also like to add, she is very patient and understanding, with the fact that our house is completely consumed with artwork constantly! lol
