We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Volz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kate, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I come from a family of entrepreneurs. My grandfather owned his own roofing business which he ran with my dad. After he passed, my dad started his own lawn care company which he still runs successfully to this day. I grew up watching them, two honest, decent men for whom the customer comes first. I learned that if you invest in your clients, the business will follow. I strive to create lasting relationships with each couple I work with and in many instances, I continue working with clients long after their wedding.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I design and produce custom wedding stationery. From save the dates to invitations to day of stationery and thank you cards. I proudly create everything in house not outsourcing unless its a large scale production. In 2008, I had a cousin who was getting married. She asked if I could design her wedding invitations and I did so happily. It was very simple, lavender and I did these cute corner punches. I discovered through that process that I absolutely LOVED designing this for her. The next year, my sister was married, my best friend was married, my best friend’s sister was married and all of them asked me to design their invitations and day of stationery. After that, word of mouth got around and my business just kind of came to be. In 2018, I made the big leap to making my business official. I established an LLC, set up business bank accounts, hosted a website….all the “business-y” things. I remember being terrified of doing something wrong in the setup of everything, but through perseverance and determination, I was able to get setup to where I am now. I’m proud to have come as far as I have in my small business. My goal is not to be so busy that I can’t remember what client I’m working with. I prefer to remain very small so I can dedicate my full attention to each client individually.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in a small city, Sandusky, Ohio, but we sure do pack a punch for things we can offer to do! If we had a day or two to experience it, we would absolutely start with breakfast at Wake Up and Waffle. My favorite breakfast spot where you can sit on the patio outside and enjoy the fresh air. My go to is the Veggie Florentine which is a vegetarian eggs benedict served on a chive waffle. DELICIOUS! After breakfast, we could take a walk in the historic downtown waterfront visiting the many museums Sandusky has to offer. The Maritime Museum, the Merry-Go-Round Museum, the Follett House Museum. Sandusky is rich in some wonderful history and I love getting to explore that. For lunch, we have to visit Landmark. The menu is amazing and I particularly love the mussels! Patio dining is a MUST here as you have a perfect view of Lake Erie. After lunch, a bike ride on the Sandusky Bay Pathway is the perfect way to burn off those extra calories. We could keep biking downtown and enjoy all of the shops. Boutiques are not in short supply here. For dinner, I adore the ambiance of J. Bistro. It’s a fine dining feel with a small town price. The live music and patio lighting makes this a dreamy dinner spot. After dinner, we have to visit the Sandusky State Theater to take in a show. The Symphony, a comedian, a Broadway tour…you never know what they’ll have, but the programming is always amazing! After our show, its off to Volstead, a hidden speakeasy for the best nightcap experience you’ll have!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without my sister. She has always been in my corner supporting me and pushing me to be my best and keep going. She made the suggestion that I start offering a holiday card for my wedding clients and that’s been one of my most popular offerings!
