Meet Alex Lee Wells | Abstract Artist & Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Lee Wells and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex Lee, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Over the past few years, the balance between work, life, and everything else has shifted heavily in favor of work. These days I don’t have nearly as much time or mental energy to devote to passion projects as I would like to have.
There’s really no balance in it at all. My life right now is 90-95% working, and what’s left I have to figure out how to divide between the things I want/need, and some days I just don’t figure that out. It’s an unfortunate side effect of living and working in this country that’s often difficult to navigate.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is primarily abstract. I love mixing different colors to bring unique canvases to life. I’m most excited to continue my artistic journey, and to keep on putting art into the world.
Professionally, I’m still not where I’d like to be, but my goal is to be able to do art full time within the next few years. It’s definitely not easy, but it’s a challenge worth overcoming, and I look forward to the day that I do!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My best friend lived in the area for a few years, but if another good friend was visiting, I would take them to some places that I think are neat. The Dublin Bridge area, Otherworld, Studio 18’s Tuesday night art hangout, Pins Mechanical Co, LevelOne Bar, and a few other places. For food, it would have to be Fujiyama’s Japanese Steak House or this cool Greek restaurant called Yanni’s.
Some of the coolest people I’ve met since moving into Columbus are people I’ve met through Studio 18 in Clintonville, so taking a friend to one of their monthly art markets would definitely be on the to-do list.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are a handful of people who, over the years, have supported me, inspired me, and encouraged me to move forward. First, and foremost, my mom. Notable inspirations and forces of encouragement include my former art teacher, Mrs. Anderson, my friends Jack, Peter, and Rae, the author Ira Robinson, my girlfriend, and others.
