We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Ziemski and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexis, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
When first started out, I thought that if I had great photography skills, I would have a successful business. While that is somewhat true, it’s also not the case…….in order to run a successful business you need to be able to navigate multiple skillsets.

While yes, you are a photographer…….you are also the customer service expert, the social media navigator, marketing director, website wiz, creative director, book keeper, etc. The sooner you realize that you’re going to need to become good at a LOT of different things, the sooner you can start improving all them all. Don’t get me wrong, great photography skills are important, but you need to have a LOT of other ones if you’re going to make a business out of it!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started my journey with photography at a young age and was working full time by the time I graduated high school so there was a lot of behind the scenes work to get me where I’m at. I basically was learning the ropes as I went, with not a lot of guidance other than my peers so it involved a lot of risky moves and quite literally “putting myself out there” – I would say getting out of my comfort zone has been the biggest tool to improving my craft.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My biggest support systems have been Ballet in the City & Cleveland Curiosities. I have gotten some incredible opportunities working with them & will forever cherish the moments we shared. I am so thankful to be working with such passionate and driven people that have kept me inspired me beyond words.
