Meet Amber Sherman | Black Caucus Chair of YDA

We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Sherman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amber, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
The main habits that have helped me succeed are consistency, authenticity, and courage. I believe in being an authentic leader that’s consistent in my love of Black people and lobbying strategically for policies that make our lives better. That also requires a lot of courage because not everyone will support what I’m doing and a lot of folks aren’t willing to take risks and be creative in the process.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been an organizer for over ten years and I started organizing politically on campaigns. I’ve only been involved in Young Democrats since 2017 but I quickly climbed the ladder of leadership there as well.
I got where I am today professionally by seeing a gap and being bold in my approach to fix the problem, whether that be representation or just lack of leadership in general. I don’t believe in continuing with the status quo just because it’s what everyone else did and being a good leader means you think outside of the box.
I want the world to know that anything is possible and when you see a need be bold, be brave, because that’s the type of leadership we need.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to the Stax museum and the National civil rights museum, then hit up a soul food spot after each. Then I would take them to the riverfront, Beale st., and to about 4 different wing spots because Memphis is really known for its wings then bbq is second. Then I would take them to a few bbq spots as well.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Several people have helped me become the leader I am today. First, my mommy, she has always told me how amazing I am and that she knew I would do big things in life. Her encouragement definitely helped. Second, my amazing Black Caucus board. They all offer different skills that contribute to the success of our board and I’m grateful for them. So shoutout to Stephon Moore (1st Vice chair), Fatima Heyward (2nd Vice chair), Donovan Belcher Ortiz (secretary), Grace Carlos (treasurer), Charity Curry (Communications Director), and Alimyon Allen (Civic Engagement director) !
