Hi Ashleigh, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
As an interior designer contemplating starting my own design firm, there are several key factors that influence my decision-making process.

Passion for design: One of the driving forces behind starting my own design firm is my deep passion for interior design. I want our team to create spaces that are aesthetically pleasing, functional, and tailored to the specific needs and desires of our clients. Having my own firm and having control of the process allows my team to become fully immersed in the creative process and bring our design visions to life.

Autonomy and creative control: By establishing my own design firm, I can have greater control over my projects and the overall design direction. I can make decisions that align with my design philosophy and values, without compromising our artistic vision. This autonomy allows me to explore innovative ideas, experiment with different design concepts, and push the boundaries of creativity.

Client relationships: Building strong relationships with clients is crucial in the field of interior design. Starting my own firm gives me the opportunity to establish a direct connection with clients from the very beginning. I can personally engage with them, understand their unique requirements, and develop a deep understanding of their preferences and lifestyle. This direct interaction fosters trust, enhances communication, and enables my firm to deliver personalized design solutions that exceed their expectations.

Business growth and financial stability: Having my own design firm allows me to have a greater stake in the business and its financial outcomes. While there are inherent risks, there are also opportunities for growth and financial stability. I can strategically build a portfolio of diverse projects, attract a wider range of clients, and expand my business over time. By effectively managing resources, establishing efficient processes, and delivering exceptional results, I can create a solid foundation for long-term success and financial security.

Flexibility and work-life balance: Entrepreneurship offers the flexibility to manage my own schedule and work on projects that align with my interests and values. It allows me to strike a better work-life balance, which is often challenging in traditional employment settings. Interior design has always been my true passion, and it is that passion that has driven me to where I am today, at the helm of my own successful design firm. From a young age, I found myself captivated by the power of space and how it can influence emotions and enhance lives. I pursued formal education in design, immersing myself in the realms of color theory, spatial planning, and aesthetics. However, it was through practical experience and hands-on projects that I truly honed my skills and developed my unique design style.

Building my own design firm was not without its challenges. Starting from scratch required immense dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to take risks. There were moments of doubt and uncertainty, when I questioned whether I had made the right decision. It was during these times that I learned the importance of resilience and self-belief. I had to trust in my abilities and remain steadfast in my pursuit of success.

Navigating the competitive world of interior design posed its own set of obstacles. I face fierce competition, demanding clients, and tight deadlines. However, each challenge serves as an opportunity for growth and learning. I have learned to be adaptable, to think creatively, and to find innovative solutions to problems. I also learned the importance of effective communication and building strong relationships with clients and suppliers. Collaborating with my team and constantly staying updated on industry trends became crucial to staying ahead of the curve.

Through the ups and downs, I have learned valuable lessons that have shaped both my professional and personal life. I have discovered the significance of patience and perseverance, as success rarely comes overnight. I have learned to embrace failure as an opportunity for growth and to view setbacks as stepping stones to success. I have also realized the importance of work-life balance, nurturing my own well-being to ensure long-term success and fulfillment.

Today, as I reflect on my journey, I am proud of how far I have come. My passion for interior design continues to fuel my drive to create beautiful, functional spaces that bring joy and inspiration to others. I am grateful for the challenges I have faced, as they have molded me into a stronger, more resilient designer. With each project, I strive to exceed expectations and leave a lasting impression. The journey may have been arduous, but the rewards have been immeasurable, and I am excited for what the future holds for my design firm.

My interior design brand is a reflection of my unique vision and passion for creating transformative spaces. With a focus on blending aesthetics, functionality, and personal style, I strive to bring clients’ dreams to life through thoughtful design solutions. Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of my favorite spots in the city is Hinkley Ledges, where my teenage boys, husband, and I can all come together to explore and appreciate the beauty of nature. It is not often we can all be together, so when we can I love when we can get lost outdoors and forget about time. The lake also provides a perfect playground for our beloved dog, who loves to lay in water.

Additionally, we have a shared love for farmers and artist markets, and one of our highlights this year was attending the market held at Hale Farm. Strolling through the vibrant stalls filled with fresh produce, handmade crafts, and local artwork, we soaked in the vibrant atmosphere and engaged with the talented artisans. Supporting local talent is one way I love to support our community.

Combining our love for nature, quality time as a family, and appreciation for local creativity, these outings to Hinkley Ledges and the farmers and artist markets have become cherished traditions that bring us closer as a family. They allow us to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, reconnect with nature, support local communities, and create beautiful memories together.

When I embarked on the journey of opening my own design firm, I couldn’t have asked for better supporters than my parents and husband. From the very beginning, they believed in my vision and stood by me through every step of the process. Their unwavering encouragement and endless support propelled me forward, even during the most challenging moments. My parents, with their wisdom and experience, provided invaluable guidance and advice, helping me navigate the intricacies of starting a business. They instilled in me a sense of determination and resilience, reminding me to never lose sight of my dreams. Meanwhile, my husband became my pillar of strength, offering unwavering emotional support and being my sounding board for ideas. He willingly took on additional responsibilities at home, allowing me to focus on building my dream. His belief in my abilities and his constant motivation pushed me to surpass my own expectations. Together, my parents and husband created a nurturing environment that gave me the confidence and courage to take risks and pursue my passion wholeheartedly. I am forever grateful for their love, encouragement, and unwavering support as they played an instrumental role in turning my dream of owning a design firm into a reality.
