We had the good fortune of connecting with BJ Wingfield and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi BJ, how do you think about risk?
Looking back to when I started my business journey compared to now, I can honestly say my view on risk taking has changed. I used to be so discouraged when it came to taking risks. Coming from poverty & not seeing many young black fashion designers whom are men that could be the perfect example for me, risk taking was out of question. Mostly from fear. Fear of not knowing the outcome. But as I grew older and understood trusting the process, without taking risk.. I wouldn’t have come this far.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
BJ Wingfield as a fashion designer/ stylist is authentic and futuristic. I’m not afraid to do the unexpected. Or wear the unusual. Providing style of uniqueness & bold Streetwear comes from my younger childhood. Growing up it was hard finding clothing that would fit me perfectly or how I envisioned it to look. Teaching myself how to hand sew, gave me the advantage of customizing clothing to fit my desire. After hearing positive feedbacks from family and peers, becoming a fashion designer was a primary goal. Styling family members in my immediate household became super easy and fun.

Turning my passion into a business was not easy though. There most certainly was down time when business wasn’t expanding. Learning to trust the process & never giving up, helped me stay consistent. Understanding that your “now crowd” wouldn’t always be you future’s crowd. Never expect everyone to like or love your creations but never get discouraged because what one finds uninterested, another can.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Let’s roll out best friend! For some good food & a diverse scenery, I’ll take them to Pinecrest. Plenty of restaurant options. For a more urban, familiar choice of music.. we’ll stop by Showcase Bar & Grille. Great atmosphere and excellent food by Chef Dearo. Where I also host karaoke nights every Wednesday. We can also check out Aura Social Lounge or The Heir Experience, which is both owned by the same owner. These are just a select few amazing spot.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I can’t express enough gratitude for how thankful I am of my family and friends. They encourage and motivates me daily. This year we loss a special family member, my cousin Chinae (Nae Nae). I would love to dedicate this shout out to her. A walking gem who cared for others before caring for herself. Someone who helped me during a time I needed the most help. Someone who tried their very best to plan gatherings, rather it was big or small to get the family together. One who’s laugh would make you laugh. Forever thankful for her presence & love.
