Meet Brad Hosfeld | Furniture Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brad Hosfeld and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brad, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
One of the most important lessons that my career has taught me is to do something you are passionate about. I know it is a cliche but if you do something you love, you’ll never work a day in your life. Finding a profession that you are genuinely interested in will make your life so much more enjoyable and fulfilling. I have always tried to do my best at everything I do and having a profession that I enjoy makes it easy to try my hardest every day. At the end of the day, you spend so much time at your career that you should try and find something that doesn’t feel like work.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I went to architecture school and was a registered architect for 5 years. I always enjoyed making things and figuring out how things are made. However, at some point in my career, I started feeling detached from the building process and was looking for something more hands-on. Naturally, I started woodworking on nights and weekends in my small, one-car garage. Eventually, I wanted to take that a step farther and decided to combine the design skills I learned in my architecture career with the building techniques that I learned on Youtube and Instagram (lol). I started designing and building my own furniture. I quickly became obsessed and this was all I was thinking about and spending most my free time on. This led to a career with A Carpenter’s Son Design Co. where I work with an amazing team designing custom, handmade furniture.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve always been a big brewery fan. Living on the west side, Thunderwing Brewing, CBC, Land Grant, Taft’s, Brewdog, and Seventh Son (not quite west side but still amazing) are some of my favorites. Also, if you haven’t heard of Westgate Brews, you need to check it out (it’s a great neighborhood tradition). I enjoy hiking and kayaking as well. My wife, Jessica, and I like talking our dog, Cali, to wag tail trail. It is a dog friendly hiking path with lots of wildlife, flowers, and river views. I have a group of friends that I like kayaking with on Darby Creek as well.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My biggest shoutout has to go out to my wife, Jessica. She has supported me through every stage of my career, regardless of how it impacts her. She has made it possible to for me to pursue my passion of furniture design/building, even if it means more work or stress for her. She is always a positive influence to me and encourages me to pursue my interests.
Professionally, I have to give a shoutout to Josh and the entire team at A Carpenter’s Son Design Co. Josh gave me the opportunity to take my passion for designing and building furniture and turning it into a career. I also get the opportunity to work with some of most-talented and hardest working furniture builders in the midwest on a daily basis and I am always impressed by their skill.
