We had the good fortune of connecting with Bradley Schultz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bradley, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I grew up with Baby Boomer parents that told me i could do anything I wanted to. So as a young person in my 20’s I took a lot of risks. I had zero fear of failure. After suffering a lot of losses I started to understand that risk taking can’t be careless. It has to calculated. Once I made the adjustment and started taking smarter risks, things started to work in my favor. But most people are not raised with a safety net. Most people I assume are not conditioned to be risk takers at a young age. You have to bet on yourself to win big in life, but it doesn’t mean you have to be stupid about it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My best songs come from hardship. I’ve written about relationship struggles, my deepest fears, the things that keep me up at night. Art is honest and painful at times. Its like a bad therapy session. If the session went really well, it probably means you didn’t get anything out of it. Music can feel like therapy, but it can also feel like a drug habit.
Our society doesn’t value art and music in a capitalistic sense. So working on art as a grown man can feel more like a distraction than a job. Its easy to get lost in the music and forget about your responsibilities as a husband, a father, a provider. Over the years, I’ve learned to balance those parts of my life and leave room for the music in a healthy way. But if I’m being honest, I know it will always be a little bit of a problem.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A lot of big music and comedy acts come through Columbus regularly. I would always look to go to Kemba Live, The Palace Theatre or The Ohio Theatre. The best rock n roll bars and venues are The King of Clubs, The Basement, The Newport. My happy place is section 114 at Nationwide Arena for a Blue Jackets game. There isn’t a better sports experience than live hockey up close and personal. There’s a hidden gem on 23N in Lewis Center called “Highbanks” park. Its a couple miles of beautiful hiking with some crazy elevation. The best pizza in the city is actually in Delaware, OH just north of Columbus. Its called Shorty’s. I will fight anyone who disagrees.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I give a lot of credit to my parents for instilling values and standards that have kept me out of trouble. I give my wife a lot of credit for being a very necessary “check and balance” in my life. That’s the thing about us creative visionary types. We’ve always got someone behind the scenes that are constantly sorting and filtering through all of our bad ideas and occasionally allowing a good idea to leak through.
