We had the good fortune of connecting with Breyona Colley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Breyona, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to create a space for athletes to discover who they are within and outside of the realm of sports. The goal of our programming is to use sports to open the door for opportunities, while simultaneously pursuing passions outside of sports. We wanted to provide a different outlook on today’s youth programming. Too many are focused on making each athlete the best athlete and not the best individual. We wanted to change the game, by instead inviting those interests into our business and finding ways for players to further develop them through internship and mentorship opportunities. We have created a safe space for athletes to discover who they are off the court while simultaneously tying that into their interest of sports. We have players who have entered into medical internships, social media and branding, arts and design, and so many more!

What should our readers know about your business?
Game Plan Athletics (GPA) is an all-encompassed sports performance company located in Columbus, OH. Founded by Breyona Colley in 2023, Game Plan Athletics is changing the game when it comes to the outlook on youth athletics. Our mission at Game Plan is not only to provide comprehensive programming to help our athletes succeed in life but also to prepare tomorrow’s youth and foster leadership and accountability for every client. GPA is not only focused on the technical aspects of the game for each athlete but focusing on the development of the athlete as a whole. Our athletes will have access to academic tutoring, mentorship and internships within a variety of different fields, financial literacy classes, social media and branding consults, sport specific training, strength training, speed and agility training, jump training, and so much more. Our athletes are more than a number on a roster, and we want to help them grow in their passions whatever they may be. At Game Plan, we are dedicated to providing more than playing opportunities, but to instill our athletes with high-level technical training that elevates the value of teamwork, responsibility, self-discipline, and leadership while helping to achieve the best version of themselves outside of and within the realm of sports.

It has not been easy, but no venture worth taking is, and this was definitely worth every late night, early morning, and hidden fear. The support of those around me was what kept me going to fight for something different, to fight for a space for athletes to find themselves by using athletics as a tool in their success not to make it their entire focus. To know that you are unconditionally supported is a hidden drive in its own. To know that win or lose this group of people would be here to support me and keep helping me define this dream is motivation to provide my absolute best for them. Being a former athlete, I remember the pressures that are put on us as players and I wanted to help create a space where athletes didn’t feel that pressure. Instead, they felt a limitless amount of support. I wanted to provide them with opportunities both in athletics and outside of that realm. I wanted to connect athletes to their passions while simultaneously creating a place for them to continue to work on their skill set. Providing a one stop shop for athletes to accomplish all of their athletic goals from sport specific training, strength training, speed and agility training, to providing them with academic tutoring all the way to mentorships and internships was the ultimate goal of this company and we are working every day to continue to grow in their development.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Can you say you visited Ohio without going to see an Ohio State football game? Well, if the trip fell in the summer, we have to attend one of the festivals that are taking place. We would definitely have to stop and do some shopping at Easton Town Center. Looking for night life, looks like we would be checking out the Short North. Looking for some different food, we are definitely going to try the North Market. There are so many little hidden gems in Columbus from the Scioto Mile to Franklin Park Conservatory, it is such a great city and has something for everyone!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not be where I am without the support of the Game Plan Families. They have all taken a big risk in trusting in this program and I could not be more thankful. Everything that I have created was designed for them and to be able to continue to help them grow is my biggest blessing. I cannot thank them enough. I also have to shout out the entire Vaughn family for helping push me to this point and supporting me every step of the way. They were a huge piece to this puzzle and none of this would have been what it is without them. I am forever grateful. Lastly, I have to thank my family. From the late nights to the early morning starts, from all the travel to the planning of opening day, to being my sounding board and everything in between they have been by side and taking on the challenges right there with me. Words could never adequately express my gratitude.
