We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian “Essince” Collins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brian “Essince”, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
I work very hard, but I strongly disagree with the “no days off’ work culture expression. I used to overwork and stay up all night, but I realized I was just spinning the proverbial wheel. Sure, I could say I checked things off the to-do list, but my business wasn’t growing. I wasn’t able to actually grow until I started balancing what was actually important and working off a smaller list., and taking care of my body by resting. You can’t pour from an empty pitcher so when my mind is clear and I’m well-rested I have the clarity to work smarter, more efficiently, and delegate.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
It wasn’t easy to get where I am, but it didn’t always feel like “work”. I love doing this. 2 of my best skills are problem solving and resourcefulness. Seeing multiple sides to all situations comes naturally to me. I’ve learned a lot the past few years about delegating. I was working for so long in the business, being a 1-man show, that I wasn’t able to grow and scale it.

I want everyone to know not to give up. It’s not always easy, it’s not always simple, but sometimes it’s that one extra hour, that one more phone call, text, or email that leads to a breakthrough.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If someone were to visit Akron, of course I’d invite them to an Akron Aviators basketball game. There is a great Mexican food truck called El Malecon that makes the best Tortas and Street Tacos. The Akron Art Musem and Library are always great. For good drinks with a local vibe I’d recommend Ray’s Pub in Highland Square. Maybe top it off with some pizza from the award-winning Luigi’s and shopping at the businesses across the street. Akron has some really cool hidden gems.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m fortunate to have had a nurturing support system in my parents. They didn’t always see the vision I had for the entertainment industry but they supported me nonetheless and encouraged me always keep learning and trying. For books, it was The Science of Getting Rich, the Bible that helped me visualize and set goals.
