Meet Briden Schueren | Queer, Trans, Artist, Activist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Briden Schueren and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Briden, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
From a young age, I felt a deep connection to being creative and processing emotions through creation. Art has always been a space where I could truly express myself—a realm where boundaries dissolve and I can communicate emotions, ideas, and experiences that words sometimes fail to capture. Pursuing an artistic career wasn’t just a choice; it was an essential life saving need for me. It became the most authentic way for me to navigate the world, connect with others, and foster a meaningful dialogue.
Art is one of my main forms of activism. It’s the way I amplify voices, create visibility, and celebrate the resilience and beauty of the queer community. I aim to build spaces where people feel seen, valued, and understood. Whether it’s through vibrant paintings that celebrate queer joy or collaborative projects that challenge societal norms, my art serves as both a personal journey and a community bridge.
I believe in the power of art to heal, inspire, and create change. It’s an invitation to others to not only observe but also participate—whether through sharing their stories, joining creative spaces, or simply feeling less alone when they encounter a piece. Art allows me to reach people on an emotional level, breaking down barriers and sparking conversations about belonging, identity, and love.
For me, art is activism in motion. It’s how I show up for my community and how I contribute to a world that values diversity and inclusion. It’s my way of saying: we are here, we matter, and there is beauty in every part of who we are.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Here’s a thoughtful response crafted from your perspective and experiences:
My art is a vibrant celebration of connection, inclusivity, and queer joy. What sets my work apart is its ability to merge personal storytelling with collective experiences. Each piece invites viewers to explore themes of identity, belonging, and the beauty of human complexity. I draw inspiration from my community and my life as a trans activist and artist, using color, movement, and texture to create immersive pieces that spark emotion and dialogue.
One of the things I’m most proud of is how my art has become a tool for activism. From creating the Beyond Binary trans and nonbinary art exhibit to collaborating on paintings that fundraise for organizations like Trans Lifeline, my work is deeply rooted in uplifting the voices and stories of marginalized communities. Queertopia, one of my most cherished projects, is a love letter to the LGBTQ+ community, designed to show young queer people that they have a place in this world.
Getting to where I am today professionally has been a journey of persistence and passion. It hasn’t been easy. As a self-taught artist, I’ve had to learn everything through trial and error while also navigating the challenges of building a career in the arts as a trans person. There were moments of doubt and times when I questioned my place in the creative world. But I leaned on my community, stayed true to my vision, and used every challenge as an opportunity to grow.
The biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way are to trust the process and to never underestimate the power of collaboration. Building a strong network of support and staying open to feedback has been invaluable. I’ve also learned that art is most impactful when it comes from a place of authenticity.
What I want the world to know about me and my work is that it’s not just about creating beautiful things—it’s about creating spaces where people feel safe, seen, and inspired. My art is a reflection of my journey and the journeys of those I’ve had the privilege to connect with. Through it, I aim to foster joy, understanding, and meaningful change. My story is one of resilience and creativity, and I hope it inspires others to embrace their own unique paths.
