Meet Carlisa Hayes | Artist & Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Carlisa Hayes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carlisa, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I started my art business, my goal was to find ways to use my creativity to make a difference while also building a foundation for my own career. I graduated from Columbus College of Art & Design with a BFA in Graphic Design in 2020, right at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the world shut down and job opportunities uncertain, I took time to reflect on what I truly enjoyed. That led me to create custom outline canvases for people to paint during the pandemic, which not only gave me purpose but also brought joy to others. From there, I realized the potential impact my art could have, and that’s how my art business was officially born.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
ARTBYCAR LLC is a multifaceted art business and brand specializing in graphic design services, custom apparel, and interactive painting events and workshops. My mission is to inspire creativity, encourage self-expression, and bring people together through various artistic experiences. Whether through hands-on workshops, personalized painting events, or custom artwork, I strive to make art accessible and enjoyable for all.
Beyond my design expertise, I am a passionate traditional artist who thrives on creativity and self-expression through painting.
ARTBYCAR’s painting events provide a welcoming and creative space where people can freely express themselves without the pressure of following strict guidelines or being an expert in painting. Attendees select what they’d like to paint based on the event’s theme, and each canvas is hand-drawn and customized to their selection. What started as a small gathering among friends has since grown into a thriving community experience.
Combining my passion for traditional art and fashion, In 2023, I began sewing my own tote bags. This led to the launch of my TOTE BAG collection, each piece handcrafted and styled by me. My collections, both current and upcoming, reflect my personal aesthetic—blending bold colors, unique patterns, and artistic expression.
Another key aspect of ARTBYCAR LLC is providing graphic design services for local businesses and organizations. With a BFA in Graphic Design, I remain passionate about branding, web design, and digital storytelling. I have had the opportunity to create logos, redesign websites, and develop marketing materials for businesses in Columbus, OH.
Alongside running my art business, I also serve as a Graphic/Web design Saturday Instructor for our youth and adult workshops. As well as the Website Coordinator at Columbus College of Art & Design, where I focus on design layouts, content updates, and optimizing user experience for prospective students, alumni, and parents.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
It so many things to do in Columbus, OH, but here are a couple of my favorite places.
Starting a day with a trip downtown to Brioso Roastery & Coffee Bar for their incredible Matcha Latte (with almond milk and vanilla)—it’s the best in the city!
We’d have to go to the Columbus Museum of Art to explore their inspiring exhibits. Their café also offers a fantastic lunch menu, perfect for a midday lunch break.
Visiting The Citadel614, a southside venue and lounge space with a rooftop view—ideal for relaxing and enjoying good music and great vibes.
A personal favorite restaurant besides (Olive Garden) would be La Fogata Grill in Pickerington, OH. It’s an authentic Mexican bar and grill known for its delicious cuisine and the best margaritas around!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am incredibly grateful for the amazing support system behind me—those who have encouraged, motivated, and pushed me forward. I could thank so many people, but I want to dedicate this to my Grandma (Carlisa Marie X Jackson), whom I am named after and who passed in 2020. She is my inspiration every day, and I know she’s looking down, proud of the woman I am becoming. Without her, none of this would be possible. I would also like to dedicate this to my close family (Mother: Irene Jackson, Brother: Quincy Spaulding, Uncle: Emanuel Ashley Cousin: Keirra Ashley) & close friends who stick by my side and motivate me every day.
Additionally, I am thankful for all of my professors at Eastland Career Center, Columbus College of Art & Design, and the internships that provided me with professional insight. I appreciate everyone I’ve met throughout my journey—each interaction has played a role in shaping who I am today.
