Meet Cat Atwell | Small Business Owner, The Bookish Moth

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cat Atwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cat, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always been a creative soul (a huge thank you to my mom for that trait) looking for that one thing that truly brought me joy and with that, The Bookish Moth was created! The thought process behind starting my small business was really just as simple as wanting to share an item that I put my heart and soul into and know that there are so many people out there who would appreciate that handmade item. There’s an entire community of book lovers and a ton of those individuals utilize a kindle, so the idea to create a cute, but functional product that also protects those devices was really a no brainer for me. My kindle sleeves are only the beginning of my shop as I’m extremely hopeful to continue growing and eventually add more things to my shop.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One of the things I would say I am most proud of is being able to learn how to sew and how quickly I was able to pick it up. I have learned A LOT along this journey from the different settings of my machine to the sizing and dimensions of the actual sleeves to the precise measurements of where to place seams and buttons, etc. I have always been a bit of a perfectionist so if one thing is off no matter how minor it is, it will bother me to no end. I try to think of myself as the buyer every single time I’m creating these pieces. If it’s something I wouldn’t be 100% happy to have paid for then it will definitely not leave my hands until it would be up to my standards. I value the individuals who support me and in return I just want to give them the very best quality I can as a one woman small business. What I would want the world to know about my brand and my story is that while yes, there are other small businesses and even large businesses doing the same kind of product, there is room in this world for everyone. I’m a firm believer that kindle sleeves are really no different from say a pair of shoes or a purse…you can never have too many!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a lover of all places unique so if I were to plan a little itinerary with my best friend it would definitely be to a cute little bookstore and/or coffee shop. The Book Loft in German Village is one of my absolute favorite places because there are so many small rooms filled with books. I could honestly be there for almost an entire day and still feel like I didn’t see everything. The next place that is an absolute must is Pistachia Vera which is conveniently just a small walk from The Book Loft. They have some of the best coffee and even better? The most amazing macarons.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a huge shoutout to my husband, Craig who has always been nothing but absolutely supportive of my wildest dreams. I could not do this life without him! I would also like to give a shoutout to two of my book besties Tonya and Jessica because without them pushing me to take the leap and open up my shop, The Bookish Moth would still just be a hopeful idea and not actually in existence yet.
