Meet Chauncey Nix” Dickens | Podcaster

We had the good fortune of connecting with Chauncey “Nix” Dickens and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nix, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always been a “spectator” of nerd culture. Reading comics, playing video games, watching anime/cartoons. You name it. But then I decided that through this platform (Do You Speak Geek) that I’ve developed, I wanted to become a “participator” of the culture. Not just someone who ingests but also influences. Whether it be my podcast, a written article, an informative TikTok/IG Reel, or just an interaction at a convention, I want to be someone who makes an active and passionate contribution to nerd culture and its people.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets me apart from other podcasts in my particular sector of the nerd space is that I pride myself on integrity and relevance. Any piece of news I report about is vetted and fact-checked. If the story is just rumors, I’m very careful to make the audience aware of such. But even then, it’s not often I repeat rumors on my podcast. It’s really easy to turn on a microphone and just talk with zero credibility and opinions on 10. But to speak the truth and still keep the audience compelled, that’s what I’m after.
Challenges arise all the time; especially the desire to create. Deepak Chopra once said, “The best use of imagination is creativity. The worst use of imagination is anxiety.” So I guess you could say that I create to overcome my worst parts. And in doing that, I’ve learned a lot about myself.
Ultimately, I want the world to know that this kid from “little town nowhere” in North Carolina looked at the things he loved, and as unattainable as it seemed, he willed his way to become a part of it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh, the homies are coming to Norfolk, VA? I got you!
Fairgrounds has THE best coffee in the city. (Cure and Three Ships are awesome too, but I’m partial.) We have to go there to get the French Toast or the Ninja Turtle. Best lattes EVER!!! We can even couple the coffee with something from Handsome Biscuit; if the line isn’t too long. But if so, d’Egg or Hair of the Dog are great spots too.
At some point during the week, we have to hit up my favorite comics shops. Local Heroes in Ghent always has what I need, but Atlantis Comics and Games in the OV are family. Perhaps afterwards catching a movie would be the move. And there is NO better way to watch a movie in the 757 than at Cinema Cafe. The experience overall makes it legendary. We could even end the evening with drinks at the Grain and enjoy the downtown view.
Norfolk is home to the Seven Venues. So maybe a show at Chrysler Hall, a stage play at the Attackus or Wells Theater, a ball game at Harbor Park, or an epic concert at the Scope would be in line. Also, we gotta make trips to Redwood Smokehouse, Granby Street Pizza, 80/20 Burger, Uncle Al’s, and definitely No Frill Bar and Grill.
