We had the good fortune of connecting with Darien Schaeffer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Darien, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
As a parent, I believe one of the most important things I’ve done for my son Dax is to create a foundation of love, support, and connection that nurtures his growth and happiness. My husband and I prioritize being present in his life—whether it’s through big milestones or the small, everyday moments. I’m incredibly intentional about fostering relationships between Dax and the important people in our lives, like our friends and family.

We encourage Dax to explore, play, and discover who he is, while providing the structure and security he needs to thrive. I think the biggest impact comes from showing him that he’s surrounded by love and a community that values him for exactly who he is. As a first-generation college graduate and a working mom, I also want him to grow up seeing the importance of hard work, resilience, and following your passions, while also cherishing the people who matter most.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I grew up in a small town in Michigan and graduated from Charlotte High School in 2013. Coming from a class of just 150 people, my journey to Michigan State University was a big leap. Attending MSU as one of the few Hispanic students from my high school came with its own challenges, including the assumptions people made about how I got there. I initially pursued journalism and broadcasting, dreaming of becoming the next Ryan Seacrest, but quickly realized that being behind the scenes was where I thrived.

My first professional role was at Güd Marketing, a local agency where I managed social media for 23 clients across industries like government, education, and more. It gave me a crash course in versatility and strategy. When my husband received a job offer in Columbus, Ohio, I saw it as an opportunity to expand my horizons. I joined Columbus State Community College as their social media manager, leveraging my previous higher ed experience. I spent three years there, including navigating the unique challenges of managing digital communications during the pandemic.

After that, I moved on to the Ohio State University College of Medicine, where I continued to grow my expertise in social media. Working alongside brilliant minds and managing campaigns that made a difference was incredibly fulfilling. Then, a dream opportunity came knocking—Victoria’s Secret invited me to join their team as a paid social media manager. Transitioning into retail has been an exciting challenge, and I feel like I’m living a dream I didn’t even know I had.

The road here hasn’t always been easy, but the challenges taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of staying true to my passions. What sets me apart is my ability to connect strategy with storytelling, drawing on my journalism background and my diverse career experiences. I want the world to know that success is about perseverance, taking risks, and leaning into opportunities—even when they lead you somewhere unexpected. My story is proof that growth happens when you embrace the journey.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As someone who’s only lived in Columbus for 5 1/2 years, I still feel like a bit of an outsider, but I’ve found so many local gems that make this city special! If my best friend were visiting for a week, I’d keep things laid-back and focused on my favorite spots. Here’s what our week would look like:

Day 1: Exploring the Classics
We’d kick things off with lunch at Roosters for wings and some classic comfort food. In the afternoon, we’d explore German Village, wandering its charming brick streets and checking out local shops. For dinner, it’s a no-brainer—we’d hit Schmidt’s Sausage Haus for their famous cream puffs and Bahama Mamas.

Day 2: Food Truck and Chill
Tacos at Los Guachos are a must—they have the most authentic and flavorful Mexican food around. Afterward, we’d spend some time at Franklin Park Conservatory, soaking in the gorgeous plants and exhibits. To cap off the day, we’d grab Mickey’s Late Night Slice for some indulgent pizza.

Day 3: Shopping and Swensons
We’d head to Easton Town Center for a mix of shopping and people-watching—it’s such a fun vibe. Lunch would be at Swensons Drive-In because you can’t visit Ohio without trying a Galley Boy burger. That evening, we’d relax with a cozy movie night at home—I’ll admit, I’m a bit of a homebody!

Day 4: Coffee and Community
We’d spend the day exploring Short North, stopping at local coffee shops and boutiques. This area is perfect for taking it slow and enjoying the creative energy of Columbus.

Day 5: Parks and Breweries
We’d start the morning at Scioto Mile, soaking up the riverfront views and fresh air. For the afternoon, we’d explore a few of Columbus’s local breweries. Even though I’m still learning the scene, the craft beer culture here is something worth diving into.

Day 6: Wrap-Up and Farewell
To finish off the week, we’d enjoy a big breakfast at a local diner before strolling through Goodale Park. It’s a peaceful way to wind down the visit and reflect on all the fun we’ve had.

Even as someone who’s still discovering Columbus, these places have made it feel like home. The mix of comfort food, community, and culture captures the heart of the city perfectly.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I ’d like to dedicate my shoutout to Andrea Ness, my first boss at a marketing agency and one of the most influential figures in my career. Andrea was truly ahead of her time—a guru in the paid social space when the field was just emerging. She not only taught me the technical skills I needed to thrive in marketing & social but also showed me how to approach challenges with creativity and confidence. Her mentorship has left a lasting impact on my career, and I still think of her guidance to this day. Andrea’s belief in me at the start of my journey gave me the foundation I needed to grow and succeed, and for that, I’m incredibly grateful.
