We had the good fortune of connecting with DeAnna Wilson, PhD., LPC, NCC, CRC and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DeAnna, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started my business during the pandemic as many of my friends were discussing the pressure that they felt to keep going and balance work, home and personal lives. I thought about my first year as a full-time assistant professor and how I did not have balance. I was “on” all the time. I worked 7 days a week trying to keep up with all of my responsibilities. During that challenging time, I learned about self-care. I now value self-care and wellness and I wanted to share that with others, especially women and other clinicians. Thankfully, my business has expanded, however; that was the genesis of Rejuvenation Training & Consulting, LLC.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I have always worked in the social services field. I started my career as a Case Manager at Franklin County Job & Family Services. I worked in that job for a little while and learned about working in the public sector. I built upon that knowledge as a Family-To-Family Coordinator for a non-profit agency, The Neighborhood House, Inc. In that role, I worked with families who had involvement with the child protection agency. I enjoyed working in the community in which I was raised with the goal of preserving the family. Within a couple of years, I was promoted to a Director of Family-To-Family. It was then that I was able to expand my leadership skills. I supervised several programs and staff at multiple locations. Again the goal of the programs were to preserve the family and ensure babies in the community lived through their first crucial years of life by providing necessary services to the baby and family.

During this time, I completed my Masters of Arts degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. It was also at that time that I had the opportunity to become the Chief Operations Officer at The Neighborhood House, Inc. That was an expanded role where I oversaw the operations of a multi-million dollar agency and professional and paraprofessional staff at multiple locations. I strengthened my leadership skills and at the insistence of the CEO began presenting at national and state-wide conferences. Facilitating engaging workshops did not come easy to me. I exercised that muscle annually at the encouragement of the CEO and within a couple of years, was a strong facilitator.  The next step in my career took me to Ohio Hospital for Psychiatry where I was the Director of the Residential Treatment Facility. Here, I was able to enhance my leadership skills even further as I worked more with clinical staff. I also utilized the clinical degree I had earned.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Counselor Educator by trade. I focused on developing my skills and worked hard to get to where I am today. In fact, the first class I taught, I questioned if being an educator was the correct path for me. However, after returning to school to earn my PhD in Counselor Education & Supervision, I was more knowledgeable, competent and confident in my abilities to teach others. Once I completed my degree, I became a full-time Counselor Educator. I have taught or held a leadership position in higher education since completing my PhD. I have risen through the ranks as an Assistant Professor, tenured Associate Professor, Program Chair and Dean. Currently, I serve as an Academic Coordinator.  I enjoy program and faculty staff development. I have a knack for engaging well with colleagues and upper leadership. I am able to present information in a succinct way that reaches my audience and sheds a new light on the information presented. These varied experiences and skills helped me become the higher education administrator and entrepreneur I am today.

Owning Rejuvenation Training & Consulting, LLC, I learned that, for the most part, that you must find your target audience and that may or may not include your family and friends. Additionally, you must network and have your pitch or elevator spiel ready at all times. It helps to be clear on what you bring to the table and be ready to share that information at all times.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Depending on the season, depends on what we would do. Since we just finished with the holiday season, I will share some of my winter favorites.

1. During the holidays, the lights at the Commons and the Wildlights at the Columbus Zoo are a must.
2. Perusing the shopping scene is also imperative. I would take my friends shopping at Easton, Polaris and the Outlet Mall in Sunbury.
3. I love to eat! So, friends must stop for food at Bud Dairy Hall, specifically at The Modern Southern Table.
4. To engage in a little laughter or other entertainment, we must catch a comedy show at The Funny Bone or a theatrical performance downtown at the Ohio Theater/PalaceTheater.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

My first shoutout goes to William Ford and Ann Poortinga. When I first started my business, William Ford was a huge supporter and introduced me to Ann Poortinga who hired me to facilitate my first paid training opportunity under Rejuvenation Training & Consulting LLC. Ann saw my skill and passion and not only that, Ann was huge in connecting me with others who could potentially utilize my services.

Additionally, Kenston Henderson was a key supporter who provided mentorship and key information and resources to help me along my entrepreneur journey. Moreover, Kenston connected me with other key industry leaders who could utilize my services or highlight my business.

Finally, I’d like to mention Allen Huff. He was the CEO who pushed me to become a workshop facilitator and encouraged me/led me on this journey of entrepreneurship.
