Meet Deodrick Ash | Baker & Treatmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Deodrick Ash and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deodrick, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My favorite affirmation is “Everything I need to succeed is already within me” This affirmation means I’m enough and anything I put my mind to I can achieve it. This affirmation has motivated me through moments I felt like I had no purpose and couldn’t find inspiration in my life.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a baker and treat maker, I create edible art. I feel like what sets me apart from others is that I create custom over the top, dramatic treats for all occasions. I’m very proud that my work and skills are all self taught, everything I know how to do is literally from watching videos on YouTube, TikTok or Pinterest and just believing that I can recreate whatever I see. Being where I am today was not easy, I invested a lot into myself. I have invested time, patience, and of course money to reach the growth I am at today. I had a lot of moments of self doubt and depression during COVID, I found my happy place in baking and creating something almost too beautiful to eat for others. Before COVID my classroom was my happy place I knew I was changing lives, and creating an impact with kids in the community. Baking really helped me find my purpose and navigate my way through the world while it was shut down. My business has taught me to be patient, trust the process, find what works for me, and protect my peace. I want the world to know that with anything there is always a solution, the storm will pass it will not last always.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well I don’t really go too many places I’m actually a home body, but I’ll try my best because I am a foodie. If my friend was visiting me and I wanted to show them the best time ever, is start with my personal favorites. Monday- I would take their first day easy just inviting them to visit my classroom and meet my students, participate in some activities at the Collinwood Recreation Center. After class cooking dinner for them at home.
Tuesday- I would make breakfast, then do something I have on my seasonal bucket list like riding scooters downtown for a tour around, ice skating downtown, or visiting Go Ape zipline adventure Park, and ending with dinner with a local black owned restaurant like Fresh Catch or Ocho Rio Island Cuisine.
Wednesday- I would take them to Addams Place or Maria’s Family Diner for breakfast, let them relax while I’m at work, and then go out to Zero Latency or Sandbox to try the Vr experience. Ending the day at Zanzibar.
Thursday- I would let this be a more laid back day of sleeping in, grabbing a smoothie, a Polish boy or corned beef sandwich, and go to the movies because they’re usually empty through the week and having the theater to yourself is pretty cool.
Friday- This is their day to go wherever they want just make a list of some stuff they want to do and I’ll look it up and we’ll go. I’ll end with having wings and fries from either Subcity or Paradise.
Saturday- I’d bring them to community service with me for the Young Leaders Program. Then later on we’d go out to poetry night at B side, karaoke, or bowling. Then we would go to the Haunted House restaurant for dinner.
Sunday- I would have them get dressed up with me for brunch at Pinstripes in Beachwood. After brunch I would take them back to my house to catch a Browns game and end the night with the game night ( Uno, Declare War, Black Card Revoked, etc)
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Through my journey as a business owner, I always accredit my position and success to my job and my friends. For 8 years now I’ve been working for an organization called the Young Leaders Program. As the after school program teacher I would always be out into a role to lead and plan ahead to resolve any issues , and really have the space to grow seeing the results of your creativity within the program. In 2020, I started baking for my students to motivate them to maintain good grades and shortly after COVID shut down our program so I began baking as way to create a source of income. During those years my friends and coworkers supported my business and showed me ways to grow in my business just as I did in my classroom. Working in an environment where I’m given the space to grow as a boss made it a little easy to believe in myself with my own business and I’m forever grateful to the Young Leaders Program.
