Meet Dominique Flaksberg | Founder and Maker at Circular Bodies

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominique Flaksberg and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dominique, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
I started Circular Bodies inspired by my personal journey of reducing waste and transitioning to healthy products for my body and home. A lot of the “sustainable” options out there have hidden synthetic ingredients or come in plastic packaging that does not biodegrade. I wanted to find products that have simple, organic ingredients that I could afford and that had packaging that would fully decompose or be reusable. Since I could not find that, I started making my own products, and later expanded that into Circular Bodies.
The work we do helps every living being on earth, as it creates day to day products that prioritize the health of the planet. We might not realize, but if a product ends up in a landfill or pollutes water and soils, it inherently affects the health of humans in the long term, as we are connected to all the other systems on Earth. As humans, we created systems and products that are responsible for pollution and health problems that affect all species and communities worldwide. We help our communities, locally and globally by honoring the cycles of nature and inviting humans to be in right relationship with the Earth by making choices that support a healthy life for all.
What should our readers know about your business?
Circular Bodies is unique because we do not compromise on quality or sustainability as we grow. We will always keep our formulas organic and synthetic free, and our packaging will always be fully biodegradable or reusable. Our recipes are also high quality and work extremely well and we won’t change them, ever. I am proud of this commitment we have to staying true to our values. I have seen many businesses loose quality as they scale and I promised myself I would only allow Circular Bodies to grow as fast as it can maintain quality and sustainability.
I have been running a wellness business for 5 years now and it has been a beautiful journey or learning how to grow, face challenges and keep my heart and my values at the center. What kept me going has always been my commitment to honoring the Earth with my work. That gave me the trust I needed that my work was important and needed, and kept me going through challenging times.
When you do something that is connected to your core values and life purpose, it is hard to give up! I am thankful for my journey as an entrepreneur and how the opportunity to keep growing in a Columbus, which has a fantastic community that I love being around and serving. If there is one lesson I learned through my work is: Do something you believe in at your core, and that knowing that you are doing the right thing will be the fuel that will keep you going through all the challenges that come your way.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ah! I love Columbus so much, and the highlight of a good time here is definitely the people, the community. My favorite spots in town to bring friends for a meal are Joya’s (The Nitro Chai is to die for!), Portias (every item on the menu is delicious and the staff is always kind) and the Dosa Corner (the food takes me right back to my travels to South India). I also love going to Saraga and eating at the small restaurant stalls, as well as choosing snacks from all over the world.
I believe Columbus has some of the best thrifting in the U.S. so I make sure to take friends thrifting when they visit. Volunteers of America and Ohio Thrift are some of my favorite ones. For a midday stop, the Matcha Soft Serve at Belle’s Bread.
At night, I look for community events such as Cacao and Ecstatic Dance or an intimate hangout with friends. If I feel like having a good drink, Lawbird is my go to.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
ah! There are so many people that inspired me and I am thankful for that is hard to pick one. My friend Kaia was the first to encourage me to start a business. She tried all my products as I developed them for myself and kept telling me how great my creations were and how amazing it would be for me to share them with my communities. I also come from a family of entrepreneurs. Listening to the stories about my great grandparents starting businesses as immigrants, reminded me I had all I needed within me to start my own. I also have parents that allowed me to express my creativity growing up, which gave me the foundation and passion to create and birth projects with confidence and joy.
