We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Melissa Carver and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Melissa, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
My work life balance has certainly changed. I’ve always been extremely ambitious, maybe too much sometimes. Definitely too much sometimes. I say this not because goals are bad or you shouldn’t continue to have them but we can become consumed. Especially if you grow up poor.

The biggest problem with growing up poor isn’t even the lack of money, in my opinion. It is the lack of resources and knowledge. We hear adults say “work hard and you’ll succeed” but we don’t take the time to see that many of them worked hard too. Yet so often they were still unhappy, sad, broke, broken, and exhausted.

I started working when I was eleven years old, twelve at my first job with a W2. From there it never stopped but I quickly learned that I couldn’t be on someone else’s schedule. I didn’t mind working many hours or days in a row but when I wanted to take off work, that’s what I was going to do. Freedom was important to me and still is.

The career I have now is my true passion, who I am and have always been. With that said, my children and my husband are my soul. Everything in my business has to either include them or be flexible to not only allow me to be there for them but spend a lot of quality time with them.

As parents we love our children so deeply that I think we often struggle with the question, Are we doing enough? Enough of what can change day by day but if we are even asking this question it shows mindfulness and concern. That expands into two answers, either we see that indeed we are or we dissect the question to where we can improve.

The most important thing that I learned as a parent, is to stop what we are doing when we can if our loved ones are trying to share something with us. So often the feeling of giving attention in the right area at the right time is actually being present and attentive. Living is what we work for, don’t forget to do that consumed by ambition.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I think what sets me apart is that there are so many people who find my delivery relatable. When I speak or write, my style is to express a mixture of my personality, experiences, knowledge, and humor all while giving solid guidance.

Lifelong learning is a top priority to me. I am not afraid to say that I have changed my mind with newly gathered information.

When I started this business I said yes to basically any opportunity that presented itself. The beginning of any practice or small business is a challenge but I really wasn’t sure what direction I was going. This decision was a blessing. It is how I started writing. Just saying yes to being a contributing writer for the Chopra website catapulted my first book. Sometimes we don’t think we are ready but if we just say yes, it not only builds confidence but also expands creativity.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would definitely hit the Pinnacles, Anglin Falls, and Raven Run for a hike. Getting in some spiritual and self care at Centered would have to be on the agenda.

I cook the majority of the time but I still have some favorite spots to eat in my area; Aqua Sushi, Limestone Grille, Papa Leno’s, Boone Tavern for lunch, Carson’s for brunch, and our newest restaurant, Honeysuckle.

After all of that eating we’re gonna have to get in some more body movement with two of my favorite people… Weight training with Tanya at Transcend Training and yoga with Veronica at Berea Fitness

If I love this person visiting I can’t let them leave without spending an entire day at one of my favorite med spas, Zero Gravity. One of my closest friends, Dr. Dawn Peak is one of the only people I trust with my skin.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh my! I owe credit to so many who have supported this journey of mine. My husband and children are not only my rock and biggest cheerleaders but they strive to live this conscious lifestyle that is so important to me. I think my husband being a fellow author and keynote speaker is helpful. He understands the work and is always willing to hop in to assist.

My mentor, davidji is wise and influential. His stage presence, humor, and teaching style was partially responsible for the many directions that career has taken. I could never thank him enough for the time he has taken to give me advice, join in on events, social media LIVES or shows that we have invited him to. As a best selling author, he was more than willing to give me the suggestions I needed when I started my book.
Many television networks, producers, and hosts have continued to have on air discussions about the topics that are important to me. These matters, in my opinion, are imperative for human growth, evolution, healing, and happiness. When I was a child I wanted the news to have more ‘feel good’ conversations and teach viewers how to improve their optimism. To play even a small role in that over the past seven or eight years literally brings tears to my eyes. I am deeply grateful to the following individuals for not only their assistance in that but their genuine interest in the topics that I bring to the table.

The entire crew at ABC Network but especially Lyssa and Doug High. Producer of Live From Chevy Chase, Ronda Simmons One of my soul sisters in North Carolina, Host of My Carolina, Amber Freeman.

Shelly Tygielski, author of Sit Down to Rise up, show host, and the most authentic, genuine, dedicated philanthropist I have ever seen on this planet! If she doesn’t inspire the human race, I’m not sure anything will. It is an honor to know her.

The people who have given endless platforms and support are all of my Chopra and IIN peeps! Especially Erica Lopez and Tami Hamilton.
