Meet Durb Morrison | Tattoo Artist, inventor and organizer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Durb Morrison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Durb, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
I have invented and patented several innovative tattoo products, including the industry’s first-ever steel tip disposable tattoo tube. This groundbreaking invention has significantly improved the precision and safety of tattooing. Additionally, I created the tattoo industry’s first-ever memory foam disposable grip cover, which effectively absorbs damaging vibrations from tattoo machines, thereby reducing strain and fatigue in artists’ hands.
Beyond my contributions to product development, I played a pivotal role in shaping the regulatory landscape of tattooing in Franklin County. I collaborated with the Columbus Board of Health to establish the current tattoo laws, ensuring safe and hygienic practices for both artists and clients.
My commitment to advancing the tattoo industry extends globally. I travel around the world, sharing my knowledge and expertise through specialized tattoo seminars. These seminars provide valuable insights and training to aspiring and experienced tattoo artists, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation in the tattoo community.
What should our readers know about your business?
I started the sixth-ever tattoo studio in Columbus, Ohio, in 1994, marking the beginning of a transformative journey in the tattoo industry. From these early days, I was driven by a passion for tattoo artistry and a desire to elevate the standards and visibility of the profession. Over the years, my dedication led to the development of one of the country’s largest and most reputable tattoo conventions, the Hell City Tattoo Festival. This event has become a cornerstone in the tattoo community, attracting top artists and enthusiasts from around the world and creating a platform for showcasing exceptional talent and innovation in tattooing.
In addition to organizing the Hell City Tattoo Festival, I have been deeply involved in product innovation within the tattoo industry. My inventions include several groundbreaking products that have significantly enhanced the tattooing experience for both artists and clients. Notably, I developed the industry’s first-ever steel tip disposable tattoo tube, which has set a new standard for precision and safety. Furthermore, I invented the first-ever memory foam disposable grip cover, designed to absorb damaging vibrations from tattoo machines, thereby reducing hand fatigue and improving comfort for artists during long sessions.
My contributions to the tattoo industry have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Steam Star Award from COSI (Center of Science and Industry) and the City of Columbus. This award highlights my commitment to innovation and excellence, not only within the tattoo community but also in the broader context of scientific and technological advancement.
My journey in the tattoo industry has been driven by a relentless pursuit of excellence and a commitment to fostering a vibrant and dynamic tattoo community. Through my studio, the Hell City Tattoo Festival, and my product innovations, I aim to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the world of tattooing, inspiring artists and enthusiasts alike to strive for new heights in their craft.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Anytime someone visits Columbus, Ohio, I love to share the vibrant culture and unique experiences this city has to offer. One of my favorite places to take visitors is the Short North Arts District. This bustling area is a hub of creativity and culinary delights, featuring an array of art galleries, boutique shops, and an impressive selection of restaurants. Whether you’re in the mood for gourmet dining, casual bites, or exploring the latest art installations, the Short North has something to captivate every visitor.
Another highlight of any visit to Columbus is a tour of the RedTree Tattoo Gallery. As a premier tattoo studio, RedTree is not just a place where incredible art is created but also a space where visitors can witness the passion and skill of our talented artists. I enjoy giving tours of the facility, showcasing the artistry and dedication that define our work. It’s an opportunity to see behind the scenes of the tattooing process and to appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into each piece.
For those interested in more cultural experiences, the Columbus Museum of Art is a must-see. The museum boasts an extensive collection of both contemporary and classic artworks, offering a rich and diverse visual journey. Special exhibitions and interactive installations make it a dynamic destination for art lovers of all ages.
Columbus is also surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, and I always recommend that visitors take some time to explore the outdoors. One of the best spots to experience nature’s beauty is Hocking Hills. Located just a short drive from the city, Hocking Hills is known for its stunning scenery, including waterfalls, caves, and hiking trails. It’s the perfect place to unwind, enjoy the fresh air, and marvel at the natural wonders of Ohio.
In essence, a visit to Columbus is incomplete without experiencing the vibrant food and art scene in the Short North, exploring the creative hub at RedTree Tattoo Gallery, delving into the cultural richness at the Columbus Museum of Art, and reconnecting with nature in the serene landscapes of Hocking Hills. These diverse attractions highlight the unique charm and allure of Columbus, making it a memorable destination for all who visit.
