Meet Esther Sands | Fashion Designer, Poet and Dance Instructor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Esther Sands and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Esther, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting my own business I feel was a cumulation of wanting to loving to create the ideas in my head and showcasing the gift I feel that God gave me. In a way the business part was just an addition to be able to do what I love to do (passion) and it being able to sustain me as a career.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a Ghanaian born American fashion designer that love to tell stories through meticulous craftmanship without reservation. I take inspiration from everything, from creation to cultures and languages. I create wearable art, womenswear, menswear and cosplay.
I am still on my professional journey, on which each and everyday presents in itself beautiful challenges and surprises. It definitely hasn’t been easy but I am grateful for the lessons and growth. Sometimes I veer off and try to fit myself in a box that is too small to contain me. I overcome these challenges through prayer and the amazing people around me.
To get to where I am today professionally, is through grace, hard work and some amazing people around me.
Some of the lessons I’ve learned so far is to be grateful no matter what, to learn to pivot when the initial plan is not working and I can achieve anything I set my mind to as long as I believe.
I would like the world to know that Amammre(my brand) is committed to designing modern armor that emboldens individuals to embrace their identity and build a global community of storytellers, one connection at a time. There is a story to be told in every design. Every piece put on should give a sense of having your own personal armor on. At Amammre we implore you to wear your story though each piece.
One thing I am proud of from 2024 was having the opportunity to Custom design and make a suit for the president of the Greater Columbus Arts Council for The Big Arts Night.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a foodie, we will definitely be grabbing food through out the week from some of my favorite restaurants around Columbus Ohio, from African food to Asian. Places like Famous 4 African restaurant, Restaurant Silla, Lavash, Bendi Wok, and of course cooking at home as I love to cook and bake. A movie and watching some of my favorite animes. Maybe go axe throwing or to an archery range, visit the art museum and any gallery showings of friends.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I will like to shoutout God first, my husband, my family and friends. Corey Winborn, Mark Cardwell and Celeste Malvar-Stewart for being amazing mentors.
