We had the good fortune of connecting with James Milbry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi James, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?

Alvin Toffler — ‘The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn. ‘

What I love about this quote is the fact that we must relearn and unlearn habits, we must change our way of life at some point. If you are not growing or trying to learn something new then that leaves you stagnate.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I can’t honestly say what sets me apart from all other photographers but what I can say is that I have a certain passion for photography. I enjoy shooting fashion and street photography. I am most proud of the fact that I have an open mind when it comes to photography. My journey in photography has been a bit challenging, I had to find my eye. I think that was the hardest thing I’ve  had to attain. I believe I learned so much by starting out  as a street photographer, street photography is not something you can control you have to learn angles and surroundings on the fly. There are so many lessons that I have learned since I started shooting photography. The best lesson that I have learned over time is to be open to ideas, be open to viewing your subject from different angles. I say don’t be afraid to challenge yourself.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

If my friend was visiting I would have to take them to North Market, we would have to make a food stop at Hoyo’s Kitchen they have some great Somali dishes. Then make a stop at Fireproof to have a glass of wine. Do some shopping at Easton then on over to Genoa park to walk off the food that we ate.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I will always dedicate my success to my mother she is the most amazing woman I know in this universe. I definitely have to shout out Vanish Photography, Golden Bee Photography and truly great painter/muralist/artist by the name of FDZ Graffiti
