Meet Jasmine McKinney | Founder of The Step Up Program Nonprofit Organization & Author

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine McKinney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasmine, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I believe that being consistent and focusing on the goal is what helped me throughout the years to become, what we are today. I had a vision and chose to act on it. I did the necessary research; I studied the field I wanted to be in, and I went to different companies asking questions that related to that field.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Step Up Program is a nonprofit organization in Cincinnati, Ohio that provides human services for those in need. We focus on helping women and families who are homeless due to domestic violence, substance abuse, chronic health conditions, low wages, and lack of affordable housing. I believe that our dedication to the cause sets us apart. We’re always looking for ways to become better. I am very proud of the work we’ve done thus far, and the people that we’ve helped. I am very grateful to come across so many beautiful individuals in this line of work. I absolutely love what I do, and I’m so excited for what’s to come. I did a lot of research on the field that I’m in today. I researched for years before I started this organization. Overall, it was fairly easy to start but to actually run the business is a whole nother story, it takes drive, the will to learn and continue learning, dedication, a lot of studying, a positive mindset, gratitude, and loving what you do.
Some of the lessons I’ve learned are, to only help those who want to help themselves as well. I can’t force people to change, they have to want to change. Another lesson that I’ve learned is that things happen, it’s not the end of the world, don’t stress over things that I can’t change. Overall, my outlook is simple, I’m going to do the best I can with what I have.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my favorite places to go are the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Barnes and Noble and Half-Priced Books, The Square downtown, and Fusion Wok Sushi because they make the best volcano rolls, vegetarian style. I like eating at Condado Tacos because they have the best vegetarian tacos and I absolutely love the artwork.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out my husband Ste’Von McKinney, he has been my biggest supporter. He believes in me and my vision and is always there and ready to help me. I would also like to shout out Kanesha Canion & Branden Reynolds, two of my best friends who have supported me from the beginning. I’d like to give a special shout-out to my children. They’re always encouraging me and helping me. I am so grateful for my team. I want to thank everyone who has supported The Step Up Program in any way. I truly appreciate you.
