Meet Jaxyn Troy | Singer-Songwriter & Stylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaxyn Troy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jaxyn, why did you pursue a creative career?
I ask myself this question often! I’m just drawn to art and creativity. I always have been. I’ve always been the type of person that knows what I’m passionate about and I have to figure out a way to pursue it. It’s almost like I’m being pulled towards it, that’s how I’ve always been with fashion and music. I always knew I wanted to style and be a singer. Some days I wish I wanted to be an accountant or or something because a “normal” career would provide consistent security. Still, I guess I just have a creative entrepreneurial spirit. I’m learning not to question it so much.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I would describe my music as R&B but I love alternative elements as well. I’m very much still in the early stages so I’m excited and anxious to hear how it transforms. What I love about how this started is seeing just how important visuals are for me. I have to see something vividly. Even if it’s a mental image, I’m able to put myself there and find the art that uncovers the emotion. I think my challenge is figuring out how to explain it to producers, to create a full song. In my first song, Corduroy Boy I randomly wrote a song after watching The Babysitter Killer Queen on Netflix for a fashion internship assignment. I’ve always been interested in color and how it’s translated into film, mainly through costume design. I was fixated on the main character’s corduroy suit and just how it expressed emotions and the juxtaposition of its use against the environment. During the writing process, I began to intertwine it into my own experience. I had gone through a bad dating situation months earlier and didn’t realize I had emotions about it that I needed to get out. I think what I’m most proud of right now is that I stopped being so ashamed of loving to sing and hiding that very important part of me. I’m learning to love my voice, and my ideas and trusting whatever rises to the surface. I want the world to know me as a songwriter because lyrics are the most important part of me. I want people to believe that whatever they love is worth pursuing and feeling shame around any part of who you are is worse than being vulnerable enough to put yourself out there and be rejected.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting Columbus I’d take them to Spoonful Records. One of my best friends just introduced me to them and I love that vibe. It’s right downtown and they have the classics. I would stop at a drive-thru to get a bag of Grippos because why not? Ohioans are the only people I’ve ever met who have heard of that brand! I know most people don’t workout when they are out of town, but, Resolve Fitness is worth it. It’s a black-owned gym and the owner LeJuan is the best trainer in the city. I would also recommend Side Bar, I love their drinks and the tapas menu is bomb! The last place I would take my friend is Cedar Point. I’m an amusement park girlie and being at Cedar Point all day will always be a good time to me.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The foundation of why I pursue dreams and passion is my mom and grandmother. They have believed in me more than myself many times. My mom has done everything humanly possible to support me, from constant prayers to financial investments. She is always there. My grandmother was the most courageous woman I’ve ever known. She taught me to always be brave and do whatever it is that I was passionate about.
