We had the good fortune of connecting with Jean Tully and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jean, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am a Jersey girl, born and raised for the first 26 years of my life. I didn’t move to Ohio until after my children were born and I wanted a better life for them.
My father and his father both owned construction companies specializing in ceramic tile and marble installation. I think that had a huge impact on my pursuit of my own business. My Dad worked hard and was know for his quality work and so was my Grandfather. A job was not done until it was perfect.
You don’t realize how much that influences you as a child until you are much older.
My Mom once told me that she never worried about me beause she knew I would always get the job done and do whatever was needed. I guess that’s because that’s what I grew up seeing in my parents.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Pearlescent Portraits is a full service, luxury portrait studio where portraits are the souvenir of an amazing experience. Yes, we supply wardrobe, hair and makeup, unique locations, a beautiful studio, beverages and snacks, and award winning, internationally published portraits, but we create memories. I am so proud of that. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been FUN! And hard, and challenging, sad, happy, frustrating, exhilarating, disappointing and so much more, as any business owner will tell you.
I got where I am with some luck, an awesome support system and never giving up. There’s always a reason to give up, but there’s always a reason to keep pushing forward too.
The lessons I am learning are not to let other people bring you down. Not everyone is your client and not everyone will like your business, let that roll off you and move on. Let the haters hate. The more successful you get, the more of them there will be.
I want the world to know that photographs are a time capsule. Portraits are never more important than when the person in them in no longer with you or when you are no longer that age or in that place. Create the memories, treasure them, and please, please, do not keep them on a hard drive or flash drive! PRINT THEM, hang them , enjoy them every day.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout 100% would be my husband, Patrick. Never in my life has someone supported me, been kind to be, listened to me, encouraged me and been there for me like he has. Every crazy idea, every dream, every wish… he doesn’t roll his eyes at me or say , “no”. I know I wouldn’t be the person I am today without him.
