Meet Jeremy Prokop | Co-Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeremy Prokop and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeremy, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
At Grindstone Jiu Jitsu Training Center, our mission is to transform lives and strengthen our community with a meaningful social impact. As a law enforcement-owned and operated business, we leverage our expertise to offer tailored training in jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, fitness, and tactical skills, empowering individuals and organizations alike. Our specialized Valkyrie Defense program, designed exclusively for women, builds confidence and self-defense skills, while our annual training for local police departments enhances their defensive tactics readiness. We’ve partnered with corporate entities like The NRP Group and the women’s construction union in Cleveland—both with higher female workforces—to provide customized training, fostering safety and growth. Highlights, such as our Armor Within Expo with UFC legend Cody Garbrandt and our kids’ jiu-jitsu programs, showcase our commitment to supporting the community and shaping future leaders, creating a ripple effect of positive change.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career journey kicked off in the world of law enforcement, where I worked full-time in the Training Division as an Active Threat Response Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, and Pistol and Rifle Instructor—roles that ignited my passion for empowering others with practical, life-saving skills and eventually pushed me to launch Grindstone Jiu Jitsu Training Center alongside my best friend and co-owner, Will Brooks. What sets me apart is combining that real-world tactical background with a genuine drive for personal development—it’s about more than just techniques; it’s about equipping people to handle real challenges and grow stronger every day. I’m most proud of and excited about the community we’ve created, where individuals tap into their resilience in meaningful ways that inspire me constantly.
The road wasn’t easy; building a business from the ground up demanded long hours, tough decisions, and navigating uncertainties that often felt overwhelming. I overcame those obstacles through consistent hard work, drawing strength from family and mentors who offered practical advice during the rough patches, and reminding myself why I started. Key lessons I’ve taken to heart include the importance of resilience—it’s built through persistence—and how true progress comes from nurturing relationships while viewing failures as stepping stones to better strategies.
What I want the world to know is that Grindstone is far from just a training spot—it’s a dedicated movement centered on authenticity and community support, born from my commitment to sharing the skills that defined my own path. My story is one of steadily transforming obstacles into opportunities, rooted in the conviction that dedicated effort and a strong support network can help anyone achieve their best.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Luckily, a good friend just visited from Washington state, and we embarked on an epic adventure in Cleveland. We dove into downtown and East 4th Street for lively eats and entertainment vibes, cheered on the Indians, then headed to The Flats for riverside unwinding with craft drinks and buzzing nightlife. We fueled up in Ohio City with fresh market finds and local brews, treating ourselves to Mitchell’s Ice Cream for a sweet highlight, strolled through Tremont for its historic charm and standout restaurants. Cleveland’s roaring crowds, gritty energy, and hidden gems made it an unforgettable time.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m truly honored to be part of the Shoutout series, and I can’t emphasize enough how my success at Grindstone Jiu Jitsu Training Center is a reflection of the incredible support I’ve received. I want to dedicate this shoutout to my family and friends, who have always believed in me and stood by me as I chased my dreams, as well as to our dedicated instructors, who work tirelessly to keep improving and shaping Grindstone into what it is today. I’d also like to recognize my business mentor, whose invaluable guidance has been a cornerstone of my journey—I would be nothing without them. Their unwavering encouragement, love, mentorship, and relentless commitment are the backbone of our success, and I’m deeply grateful for every moment they’ve cheered me on and elevated our community.
