We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Sipp and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I am from a small town called Chippewa Lake. I lived there my entire childhood. I grew up around the majority of my family, so cousins, aunts and uncles, and my grandparents. We were a very family oriented group. We celebrated every holiday at my grandma and grandpas house in Chatham. With holidays and birthdays and parties there is always food involved. I grew up loving my grandparents cooking so much I would bring my own Tupperware over to take my own leftovers home in.

Being so close to my family, us cousins always spent the summers and breaks together. Every Christmas we would gather and spend a day or more making Christmas Cookies. I remember my grandma always making the candy for our Easter baskets. One year my cousin came home from being over seas and we had an entire party to celebrate every single holiday, birthday and event he had missed.

Food, baking and feeding others has always been a part of my life. When I went off to college I had no money for Christmas presents but wanted to do something for those in my life. I ended up making platters of Christmas Cookies for everyone. This became a yearly thing until moving back home.

Once I was home and my Husband and I had our daughter I started baking again. After my son was born I became a stay at home mom and really got back into baking. I started making their birthday cakes and posting them online, asking if anyone needed a cake baked, and from there my business grew!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The cakes and cookies and all other treats that I make are made with love. I know that sounds cheesy, but I come from a family where you feed people, all people, whoever they are, if they are around you and you want to show them you care, you feed them. I like to say that I am my grandma, because I usually cook, or bake, enough to feed an army.

If you come to my house you are bound to get a meal and dessert. If you see me out and about I will definitely have snacks on me and many times they will be homemade cookies sealed up and ready to share! If i bake something for myself, or my family, at home I will make sure to make extras to take to friends, or teachers, or even our local post office ladies.

Turning my passion for baking into a business has not been easy. While it is just baking in a bigger quantity, there is also the concern about others not liking what I make them. I make everything by hand, to order. I use very simple equipment to decorate and make sure everything I put on a cake is edible. I don’t use a printer, or any fancy contraptions. My hands may shake if I’m piping for too long, my lines may not be perfectly straight, and sometimes I have to remix a color and it may be slightly off from the first batch. While I know my handmade items will not be absolutely perfect, they will always be delicious. That’s my guarantee. Pretty and delicious.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First thing I like to do anywhere is visit a local coffee shop. Cool Beans in Medina right off the square is by far my favorite. If it’s a Saturday in the summer we are heading over to the square for the Farmers Market. After that I’m heading to one of the local Parks for a walk. Buckeye Woods, Hubbard Valley and Oenslager Nature Center are just a few of our families favorites. Depending on what you want for dinner here’s a few of my favorites: for Mexican I’m going to El Rincon in Wadsworth, for Sushi I’m heading over to Project Sushi and my husband will be next door getting Ramen at Edamame. Then for dessert, if I didn’t have anything made, we would head over to Scoops in Seville.

If we have extra time in our visit we are heading up north, first stop- Cedar Point, next stop is Toledo. Toledo was my home away from home for almost a decade. I fell in love with some of the best little spots there and still go back occasionally just to eat, and visit friends. Our coffee stop is going to be Maddie & Bellas in Perrysburg, Then you are going a few doors down to SWIG to get some of the best bar food you could ask for. Everything is made in house and it has the best atmosphere. There are some amazing parks to visit while up in Toledo too. Wildwood park was always my favorite, it has some of the longest paths and best views and you would never know you were in the middle of Toledo. For dinner I’m going to San Marcos, because there I can get tacos and do some grocery shopping, I get the best Vanilla from the grocery store there.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My paternal grandma, and maternal great grandma are both the inspiration behind all that I make. I have many of their recipes, hand written by them. I have them laminated and saved in a recipe box that I pull out almost daily. It reminds me of them and our family.
