We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Wright and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued an artistic and creative career simply because it makes me happy. Coming from higher education, corporate positions and the abiding 9 to 5 I wanted a little more freedom. I have a personality that is like a “social butterfly” or assertive when needed. Due to my higher education, I found it easier to start a business and continue running it. Now over 7 years full time with no additional income, the time and money thrown into school did pay off. Pursuing an artistic and creative career is not easy, but it has been fulfilling for a better work and personal life balance.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Having a camera in my hand since the very early 90’s, a box of paints or a charcoal pencil to draw with being creative was pure. Being in business for over 10 years, with 6 being full time, I have seen my fair share of ups and downs. However, I am most proud that I keep at it and progress more and more with time. Photography is not a career choice if you think it is an overnight money making job. So much more goes into the background with this career; especially as a destination photographer. With so many similar styles of editing, photo taking, and more I think my personality is truly what sets me apart from others. I take pride in my clients, and being selective helps me give more time and passion into their photography experience.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being a person that hops around for work, it would really just depend on where I am at during their visit! However, a typical visit does have a good google doc timeline (as all the friends know me for this), filled with ma and pa places local to the area. A farmers market on the weekend with a good glass of wine for a night cap. Some of the most fun and interesting finds are simply hanging out in the smaller side of downtowns where live music is playing.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A little extra credit would be to my mom. Growing up, if there was one thing I was always granted it was packs of 35mm film and a weekly trip up to Kmart to develop them. Photography back then wasn’t something I thought about doing. It was a hobby that go me through grade school, as everyone knew I was the one to keep a camera in the bookbag. My mom would randomly set a new box of film out or pick up my photos without me asking. Looking back now, it was definitely encouragement to where I am today. Still one of my biggest supporters, she is always asking about work and cheering me on.
