Meet Jillian Highsmith | Founder of The What’s Next Project

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jillian Highsmith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jillian, what is the most important factor behind your success?
As the Founder of The What’s Next Project, I attribute my success and the triumph of my brand to the unwavering commitment to a well-defined Vision and Mission, combined with an unrelenting pursuit of consistency. The cornerstone of my journey has been the establishment of a clear and compelling vision for my business. It not only provides a roadmap for the future but also encapsulates our purpose and the impact we aim to make on our community with our youth. With a distinct vision, we not only chart a strategic course but also inspire our team, clarifying our collective purpose.
In parallel, our meticulously crafted mission statement guides the daily operations of our organization. It’s a succinct expression of our values and principles, directing the actions and decisions that we make. It’s a compass that orients our team and ensures that our organization remains aligned with its core purpose.
Consistency, too, is an indispensable element of our success. It underpins our journey of personal growth and skill development. Our commitment to consistency fosters a continuous process of learning, adaptation, and improvement over time. In the dynamic landscape of business, it is this perpetual growth that bolsters our competitiveness.
As a young African American female business owner, these principles take on an even more profound significance. They are not just the building blocks of my business but also a testament to my resilience, determination, and commitment to making a lasting impact. I believe that a clear vision and unyielding consistency are my means of overcoming challenges and inspiring change in the business world. They are my legacy, representing not just personal success but also the broader narrative of diversity and inclusion in the world of being a business owner.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The foundation of my journey in my business is the transformation of my wounds into wisdom and the alignment of my passion and purpose to become my driving force. This differentiation sets me apart, which I attribute to living the mission that The What’s Next Project represents. To illustrate this journey, let me share my testimony.
At the age of 16, I was informed that college was not a suitable path for me due to my struggles with a severe anxiety diagnosis, which had led to my inability to pass the Ohio Graduation Test. Instead, I was advised to pursue a career in cosmetology based solely on my appearance. This advice was deeply hurtful, as it reinforced the belief that no one believed in my dreams. I felt like a failure, especially as I scored a 13 on the ACT while my friends received college scholarships and celebrated their graduation. This left me uncertain about my future, and I kept asking myself, “What is next for me? Does my life have a purpose at all?”
Thankfully, I found a mentor and received unwavering support from my parents in overcoming the obstacles I faced. Through therapy, I learned to prioritize ‘Faith over Fear.’ With the guidance of my mentor and my supportive community, I not only passed the Ohio Graduation Test but also gained acceptance into the Biddle program at Johnson C. Smith University, where I pursued my college education despite the academic challenges I had encountered. Eventually, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Johnson C. Smith University.
I have transformed my wounds into wisdom and now live my purpose as the founder of The What’s Next Project, a transformative girls’ outreach program based in Charlotte, NC. Our mission is to empower young women to develop strong skillsets for both academic and personal success.
I want the world to understand that even though the journey to reach this point was arduous, it doesn’t become easier as you achieve different levels of success. I continue to face barriers and obstacles that don’t always come with an easy solution. Success often demands sacrifices, whether in terms of time, energy, or personal life. Achieving success might require long hours, sleepless nights, and delayed gratification, all of which can be demanding and challenging. Ultimately, success is not easy because it demands continuous self-improvement and the ability to learn from failures and adapt to changing circumstances. It requires a strong work ethic, determination, and a willingness to confront and overcome obstacles. Despite the difficulties, the journey to success is often incredibly rewarding, as it offers personal growth, a sense of accomplishment, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting Ohio, and I wanted to ensure they had an unforgettable time, I would take them to some of my hometown favorites in Toledo, Ohio. First, we’d start with a sweet treat at Mr. G’s Barn, an ice cream place. After indulging in delicious ice cream, we’d head to Cooper Hawks Winery & Restaurant or The Heights for some cocktails and a delightful dining experience.
Our adventure would continue with a road trip to Cedar Point and Kalahari Waterpark, where we’d spend a few fun-filled days enjoying thrilling rides and waterpark adventures. To ensure relaxation and rejuvenation, I’d plan a relaxing massage and facial appointment for us at Serenity Health and Wellness Center. Finally, to capture the memories of our visit, I’d arrange a best friend photoshoot with the talented team at groundUP Creativity Agency.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to express my deep appreciation to Girl Talk Foundation, Inc. located in Charlotte, NC, for their unwavering support of various community organizations and small businesses that align seamlessly with their vision. Their commitment to empowering and uplifting our young girls in the community serves as a constant source of inspiration and holds immeasurable value. Thanks to their generous support and opportunities they have offered The What’s Next Project, we’ve been able to establish meaningful connections and create a positive impact within our community.
Their support not only provides essential resources but also underscores the strength of collaborative efforts and shared values. When organizations like ours unite for a common cause, we can achieve remarkable outcomes. Their ongoing support is a shining example of the transformative change that can arise from the synergy of like-minded organizations. We eagerly anticipate future collaborations and the continued positive impact it will bring to our community.
