We had the good fortune of connecting with Joe Perry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joe, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Well, I had been working for other people my whole adult life. And I just knew that wasn’t my “forever” goal. So after learning and managing others’ business, I came to the conclusion that I could be doing this for myself, and feel more fulfilled.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As an artist, I am able to focus on multiple forms of media- whether I’m painting, drawing, or tattooing, I get to use my skillsets to make a living. And being a classically trained artist allows me to approach my job from a different angle than others. When I started this venture it was not the easiest thing to do. I had to quit a job that had security, a retirement plan, benefits etc. So taking that risk was intimidating. But I knew I belonged in the tattoo industry, so I had to chase after the opportunities that presented themselves.
That in itself was Also a learning experience. How and when to chase an opportunity, and when to let one pass or sit on the back burner for a later time. Because sometimes opportunities present themselves at the absolute worst and Inopportune times! So patience and an analytical thought process is a must.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh gosh, this is a tough one. I’m very much a homebody, and I keep to myself a Lot.
But there a couple really nice coffee spots in the area that are nice to sit and chill at. And then after that, I would say the Butler Museum of Art is a good visit too.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Family. Without their undying support and understanding, I’d still be where I was a dozen years ago.
