We had the good fortune of connecting with Joel Cookston and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joel, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
To me, risk is uncharted opportunity. Some may think opportunity means reward, fame and riches, but opportunity tied to risk is often time a much different reward. The reward may come in lessons learned from multiple failures, networking to meet that one person who can take you to the next level or maybe just finding out how much farther you will go than the person next to you.

I’ve taken calculated risks throughout my career, preparing the landing well in advance prior to the jump. The landing in most cases was a new business venture using my own skills or talents to build the shell and gauge the viability of the business. My true goal was to create a product I could market and grow a machine to either produce that product or white label it from a manufacturer.

My dream came true when I found a product not being built in the US at the time. I fell in the love with the concept and ran with it.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Based in the heart of the Midwest, Trek Pools is proud to be the first manufacturer of shipping container pools in the US. We offer custom container pool designs based on our clients needs. It’s exciting to work with home owners, developers and pool builders across the US to come up with new and unique designs. Splash pads, windows, waterfalls and swim-up bars are all possible with a Trek Container Pool.

The main selling point of a Trek Container Pool is the fact that it’s built to be a retaining wall. No pool to date has been able to do what a Trek Container Pool can do.

All of our pool interiors are constructed out of plate steel. Then, the exteriors are coated with marine grade products from Sherwin Williams and the interior coating has been used on waterparks and slides in the US for decades. The qaulity and craftsmanship of our pools set us apart from other manufactures outside of the US.

Now more than ever, consumers are buying online. Never before have we had the ability to purchase a “high-end” pool online with premium pool equipment and functionality as a locally purchased and installed pool. Consumers want options and control. Trek Container Pools gives them both, without the months of construction and costly revisions that escalate the budget.

There are two men that are instrumental to the success of Trek Pools: Jim Chaplin and Jonathan Koch. Jim Chaplin is another Co-Founder of Trek Pools and together we have carved the trail. Jonathan Koch has been our business mentor from the beginning. He believed in us when there was only a dream.
