We had the good fortune of connecting with Kat Hansen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kat, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
I value generosity the most in running my Hope and Courage platform because it fosters a supportive community, inspires others to act with kindness, and amplifies the impact of my mission: to equip, empower, and encourage parents of children with congenital heart disease (CHD). Generosity not only builds trust between me and my audience and strong relationships among my network of friends who are also looking to make an impact in the CHD community. Prioritizing generosity generates tangible benefits as well, such as growing your following when you team up with another entrepreneur in your field to create a new resource your audience needs. Having a generosity mindset aligns with the core values of Hope and Courage, ensuring its growth and sustainability while making a meaningful difference in the lives of CHD families.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I run a platform called Hope and Courage that I created with my husband Tom. We seek to equip, empower, and encourage parents of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) with hope and courage on their family’s challenging journey with CHD. This goal is accomplished through our book “Hope and Courage: Six Life Lessons from the Parents of a Child with Congenital Heart Disease”, our podcast “The Hope and Courage Podcast for CHD Parents”, free downloads on our website tomandkathansen.com, and our social media presence.

We have first-hand experience with CHD as our son Harding was diagnosed with it back in 2014. Since then we’ve been through all the ups and downs that come along with having a child with CHD. Through it all, we’ve gained valuable insights, stories of hope, and tips from CHD experts that we seek to share with parents like us.

Although running this platform can be a challenge while also having to be a medical parent, I consider it an honor to help my fellow parents in their time of need. CHD parents are desperate for help and it is my passion to give them as much help as possible.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Since we are located in Cincinnati, OH, I would start out the day with a trip to Servatti’s to get coffee and the best donuts in the city. Then I would take them to Smale Park to walk around and enjoy the sights of our great city. For lunch I would take them to Skyline to grab a 3-way and cheese coney, and if there was a football game that day I’d take them to PayCor stadium to watch our championship Bengals football gain another victory. After the game I would take them to Nada to get some fantastic hispanic cuisine and then go to the 16-Bit Bar & Arcade to end the day with a bang!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to shout out The Heart Community Collection and their never-ending support of my Hope and Courage platform. They are fantastic partners and are constantly looking for ways to uplift those looking to make an impact in the lives of CHD families.
