We had the good fortune of connecting with Katherine Troyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katherine, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Honestly, the most important factor behind the success of Homeslice Living was, and still is, only listening to my internal guidance system about how I wanted to create my business.

I started HSL as a home staging and design consulting company and after 3 years into that business I switched up my focus and offerings to design consulting and Feng Shui. Through that process I lost a lot of business connections, clients, friends and personal relationships because not many people understood my why.

I had to come to terms with the fact that I chose a different path and that not everyone would understand my new journey and the way I wanted to build it. Now 3.5 years from that initial pivot, I am so grateful that I trusted my instincts and followed the path that felt right to me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Why I am not technically an artist, my personal Feng Shui practice and the way I teach my students and work with clients has definitely become my art form.

Sometimes I think I need a new word for what I am doing— it’s not just Feng Shui, it’s mind, body, spirit and home connection. It’s getting connected with your home to help heal your body and nervous system. It’s not about just moving furniture, it’s about finding our truest self through the medium of your home. It’s not just about creating an aesthetically pleasing space, it’s about curating spaces that reprogram your mind and remind you of the lifestyle that most aligned with the internal you.

Standing in this deeper connection with Feng Shui has been challenging for a big part of my journey as I could have created a larger business faster by creating content and services that only touch the surface of the home and of the client. But, that just isn’t me. My beliefs are deep, my understanding is deep and my practice is about teaching rather than telling someone what to do with no context. And even though that has been challenging at times, I would not trade it for anything because I am doing my business, MY WAY, the way that’s most aligned with my most authentic self.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Lakewood near Rocky River so I would take my best friend to enjoy a walk through the Rocky River reservation, followed by coffee at Propaganda Coffee in Lakewood. After that, I would take them to stroll the Musem of Art in Cleveland followed by a fun dinner outside at Wine Bar back in Rocky River.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would dedicate this to the one person who always believed in me and always supported my vision no matter what. Robbie Cornelius, my best friend and closest confident, I am so grateful for all of your support and wisdom through our many years of friendship. When everyone else called me crazy, you called me brave. When everyone else doubted me, you dug in deeper and shared your belief in me. Words will never be able to express how much I love you for that and how much I miss you since you passed over the Summer.
