We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelli Beecher and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelli, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
My business will help the community because it is focused on bettering a person’s overall well-being, mentally and physically by providing people in the community a safe space for holistic practices as well as more traditional western medicine practices. I will provide IV therapy, which has become very popular recently, as well as meditation and mindfulness exercises.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am currently working full-time as an Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Nursing and I also work part-time as a Nurse Practitioner. The path to get to where I am now was not easy. After graduating from Tennessee State University with B.S. in Clinical Laboratory Science, I had a vision of going to graduate school to become a Physician Assistant and I was rejected by all 10 schools I applied to. I then went to Cincinnati State to take some classes to try to raise my GPA. After that, I applied to 3 Masters programs to become a nurse practitioner, I was rejected by 1, waitlisted by 1, and finally accepted by 1 but only for a Bachelor’s of Nursing. I decided to go ahead and do the BSN program, it was an accelerated program so I did 4 years of nursing school in 16 months. Upon graduation, I began working in the hospital as a RN but still had the dream of becoming a nurse practitioner so I applied to UC’s Doctorate of Nursing program and was accepted! I completed that degree in 4 years, while working full time. Before graduating, I was offered a position to teach in the college of nursing. So here I am, a graduate of the Doctoral program and one of the very Black Professors in the same college of nursing that had once rejected my application for their Masters program. So if you have a dream and a vision, don’t let anyone or anybody deter you from it!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shout out to my mother, Patricia Beecher. She is truly my best friend and has supported through all of the ups and downs throughout my life. She gave me life at birth and continues to breathe life into me every chance that she gets. I would be nothing without her.
