Meet Lindsay Berndt | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsay Berndt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindsay, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor to any success I’ve had has been holding myself accountable for being the most authentic version of myself with every ounce of work that comes my way. There have been moments where I start to feel that I am only making work for the sake of having something to show for myself, it’s immediately noticeable when your brain turns from quality over quantity to quantity over quality. I take on work that fuels my fire and work with clients who want to work with me to capture who they are with how I communicate through photography.
I always prioritize open communication and trust between myself and anyone I work with. THIS is what makes me able to run a business and keep my brand strong.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have a hard time comparing myself with other artists because that is when I start to feel a type of pressure that isn’t conducive to my process and work itself. I feel extremely lucky to live in Columbus where I am surrounded by all different types of people with different artistic practices. I love that I’ve come to a point where I just feel simply inspired by everyone, there is space for everyone in the art community.
My relationship with photography has been quite the rollercoaster, and getting to the point where I am now has been a long journey that still comes with moments of feeling lost. I was born in 1998, so I feel like I was very much raised side by side with the rapid pace at which technology is advancing. Social media came into my life around the end of middle school / early high school, you can imagine what being exposed to something so uncontrollable at such a young age does. I have really had to rework my relationship with social media, and often have to revisit this. Imposter syndrome is the realest feeling ever. I can’t begin to tell you how much time I have spent comparing myself to other artists and being so concerned with how quickly people were producing work in comparison to what I was doing. I try to remind myself that I will not be forgotten (as a person or artist) if I don’t post on social media every single day, week, month etc.., doing what feels best for YOU is what will make you find success.
Setting boundaries with yourself, technology and people around you will always lead to being successful, even if it takes a bit more time or takes the space of a different definition of success.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Wow there is so much to pick from…. where do I even begin. In terms of my go-to spots for food and drinks, the must haves have got to be Cherbourg Bakery in Bexley – you won’t find better gluten free baked goods, Wario’s is a classic spot that completely lives up to the hype, Club 185 in German Village has such an underrated happy hour and in general great food for a great price and of course I have to include Ledo’s Bar in Old North – my favorite place to have drinks and play pool with friends.
If I’m looking to kill time in the afternoons I love checking out the Ohio Craft Museum, they always have cool exhibits up full of art from almost all local artists. And finally, nothing quite like the Metro Parks. I utilize so many of these spaces to take photos and always feel very inspired by being removed from the high paced environment I live in. Some of my favorites include Park of Roses, Highbanks, Three Creeks and Walnut Woods 🙂
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My dad Jeff, who has supported me wanting to be an artist since I first picked up a camera back in high school. My boyfriend Chance, thank you for encouraging me to put my all into every shoot I do, even when I feel utterly exhausted. My mentor Whitney Brown, for the endless knowledge on all things lighting and business. And of course all my ladies – I have the most talented and inspiring friends in the world, I would not be able to pursue what I do without the extremely powerful and bold women in my life.
