Hi Lisa Jones, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
About Brewhaus Bakery & Dog Bones
The Brewhaus Bakery Co. is a not-for-profit 501c3 bakery organization to help individuals with disabilities develop vocational skills, and have fun, meaningful training and work opportunities. The Brewhaus Bakery seeks to grow, reinforce and strengthen a socially conscious business model through the production of handcrafted baked goods for dogs; we make all natural, handcrafted dog treats with spent beer grains! Brewhaus is dedicated to providing a platform for personal development, empowerment, and community engagement that demonstrates everyone has value and can make a unique contribution for community success and active citizenship. We help our community and world to respect, honor and see the good work that happens when we empower and lift up individuals in our supported work environment!
Brewhaus Bakery & Dog Bones was founded in 2014 with creative spirit and a lofty objective: to offer safe, wholesome, nutrient dense, small batch dog treats made with craft beer grains at a fair price in an efficient, effective, and financially sustainable social enterprise education & business model to benefit young adults with a disability.
We’ve grown into a collaborative baking space to foster a creative, inclusive environment with additional opportunities for skill development and growth. Our goal is to foster a fun, creative bake space in which people and food businesses can thrive!
100% OF ALL PURCHASES DIRECTLY SUPPORT TRAINING & EMPLOYMENT FOR YOUNG ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My life took a significant detour with my second pregnancy; found out early our baby was tiny and going to have some challenges due to a genetic abnormality called an unbalanced translocation; I found out I was a carrier of this rare diagnosis. First challenge for my baby girl was being born early and coming home at 4 lbs with plaster casts on her legs to work on straightening severe club feet, the first of many difficulties that lay ahead for us all. That meant a break in my work world and then a change to social work once I was ready to reenter the workforce. I was told many times by childcare providers, “we’re not equipped to deal with a child like that”. I decided to switch gears from clinical research to social work to have more direct impact on patient care which ultimately led me to transfer a skill set to laying out a social enterprise non profit model to provide training and employment for individuals with a disability by making dog treats; it connected all the dots of helping others, a life long passion for animals, especially dogs, and a unique entrepreneurial approach to repurposing spent beer grains! I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished in our 9 year history! We bake doggy treats for all locations of Graeter’s Ice Cream, Lagunitas Brewing in Petaluma, CA, BrewDog in Columbus OH, Great Lakes in Cleveland, Cigar City in Tampa FL, all locations of Double Dog Restaurant Group and many breweries here in Cincinnati!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a country girl and love nature, animals, sunny days and walks in the woods! But when I need some good food I ride my bike to some of the local breweries for good local craft beer and great options from either food trucks or on site restaurant options. I crave healthy farm to table type food and love to support locals! When I need my city fix, I wander around Findlay Market in Cincinnati, one of the oldest open air markets in the country, and walk my way through the maze of the city in search of unique shops and ice creams stops!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shout out to my partner in life, Larry, who helps make it all work, who stands beside me as my pillar of strength and funny guy!
