We had the good fortune of connecting with Meranis Moss and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Meranis, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
Be realistic. I think if you want to be successful and do unbelievable things, you have to be a little delusional. Especially if you want to be a trail blazer in your field. You have to be able to think outside the box. You have to be willing to take risks that others won’t. You have to have to believe so hard that your goals are attainable despite what anyone else says. Imagine if people told the Wright brothers to be realistic. We wouldn’t have planes! If someone tells me I can’t do something I just say “watch me.” And whether I do or don’t accomplish it, I at least believe that I can. The belief alone is half the battle. It’s very mental. Honestly, if your goals aren’t “unrealistic” then you’re thinking too small.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well I do a lot of different things revolving around music. I am a songwriter, producer, artist, recording engineer, emcee, stage tech, percussionist, guitarist, and I play the ukulele. And I’m sure there will be many more titles I can add to that list. I would consider myself a jack of all trades.

It was hard at first because I knew I wanted to be in music, but I didn’t know exactly where I fit in. In a way. I still don’t. But I have learned a lot of skills that allow me to be involved in a lot of different opportunities. I have a growth mindset so I’m always looking to learn new things or improve my skills. Sometimes it’s hard to pick what to focus on though. I do think that by trying lots of different things it helps to develop a better understanding of self. So try it all! And when you figure out what you like and what you’re good at, double down on it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hmmmm…. there are so many options! Cincinnati really has a lot to offer. For me I would probably start with a walk around Eden Park. Maybe pop into the art museum. Grab a bite to eat somewhere in Mount Adams or OTR. I’m a big sports fan so if there is a Bengals game or a Reds game I would probably hit that. And then try to catch a show at any of the music venues! Cincinnati has a pretty solid local music scene so there are plenty of spots to check out that have live music. Plus it’s always good to support local.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There is a book that I’ve read a few times called “The War of Art” by Steven Pressfield. It talks about overcoming resistance. Resistance is basically anything that is keeping you away from doing the work you are meant to do. I think a lot of people end up living their entire lives doing things they think they should or just avoiding their purpose all together, and that’s a real shame. My goal is to inspire people to actually go after their dreams. What really speaks to them. I hope that I can be an example that, if you go after what you really want and put in the work consistently, you can live the life of your dreams. That book reminds me how important it is to stay focused and overcome resistance everyday. I highly recommend it to anyone.
