Meet LOFILA – DJ / Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with LOFILA and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LOFILA , what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
The first time I saw my favorite band Tycho play live in 2017, I was so moved I felt I HAD to do something about it. Watching Tycho play live on synthesizers truly opened my eyes to the artistry behind electronic music. I’ve always been passionate about music, and I’ve also always been interested in physics. I realized synthesizers were, in a very simplified way, harnessing electrons through electrical current, and making something out of that which can move people in a very profound way. Thus, I took a deep dive into modular synthesis, and other electronic instruments in a way that more “classical” equipment never spoke to me. I bought my first synthesizer that year, the Moog Grandmother, and I’ve never felt more fulfilled creatively. My “career” was a byproduct of that passion and interest, and truly took form in a very organic way.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey started back in 2017. I always had a very specific vision, to express emotion through music in a way that speaks to any individual who may listen. I started out with my side project, Locution Field Lab, in the realm of moody electronica. This project focuses on the feelings of nostalgia and longing, and has always been an expression of my story. I split this into my second project, LOFILA, which explores the darkness of life through techno. Starting out, I was doubted. Many people told me to, “sell my face”, “play popular music if you want to get booked”, or “just give up, nobody in Ohio likes techno”. I stuck to my truth and pushed forward regardless. In doing so, I was able to introduce many people to different styles of music. That to me is worth more than anything.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love showing people my city, and Columbus has so much to offer! I’d start off grabbing a coffee at one line, upper cup, or fox in the snow. There’s a lot of great parks here in Columbus to visit, like Franklin Park Conservatory, Innis Woods, and the Scioto Audobon Metro Park. I also love to shop so definitely would recommend checking out many of the boutiques around the area like The Witch Lab, Flower Child, Pitaya and some art galleries around the Short North area. As for nightlife, there are tons of great venues and local events to attend like The Summit Music Hall, Half Baked, Headcleaner, Deep Field, Ginger Rabbit, and more. In the summer months, I definitely recommend checking out some of the festivals like ComFest, Pride, and the Doo Dah parade.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The people I would like to recognize are those who have supported me and my vision from the very beginning, believed in me and respected me as a woman new to the industry. To name a few; The Crates crew: Chris Karlyn, TJ Beckett, Richie Tel, Diego Rasgado, and Mike Dow; Ope Collective, Liz Mitchell (Lizsco), Jenny Donaldson (Jenny Arcade), Aubrey Masters, Madeline Stecz, Justin Mansour, Cassandra Kolesar, and the many dedicated fans who have made this journey possible.
