Meet Miriam Hodesh | Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Miriam Hodesh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Miriam, how do you think about risk?
I feel like taking risks is critical to growing and learning. If you have a strong support network than taking risks can become a part of your own DNA. In my life, taking risks has led to the most important achievements in my life. I’m sure it has also led to some of my failures too…..but I have a “glass is half-full’ kind of perspective so I will always be the person saying go-for-it!
I recently worked on learning about my character strengths. Risk is not a specific option…but my core strengths are probably zest for life and perseverance. A value like risk can be underused or overused….the goal is finding the balance for an optimal use!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Columns is a modern event space in the heart of Findlay Market! My husband Jake and I bought a building on the South Side of the market at 109 W Elder Street 5 years ago. We renovated during the pandemic. This building had been empty for 20 years before we bought it and breathed new life into it! It was originally built in 1874 by Moses Goldsmith. He was a real estate guy and very creative and eccentric. I have a feeling he would be happy we with what we did to his building.
The vision behind The Columns was to create a space where clients come in and can transform the space to meet their needs whether it be for a corporate off-site, rehearsal dinner, wedding or private party. We wanted to add something different to Findlay Market and the Cincinnati community.
There are many challenges to owning a business. Every day is for sure an adventure. Besides owning an event space, my husband renovates old building and finds commercial tenants. We are finishing up a big 10,000 sq ft warehouse in Camp Washington right now! We find that every day presents its fair share of challenges. The goal is to be ready as well as you can and have great people to call on to help you along the way!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh wow! This is great….its like 36 hours in Cincinnati. My daughter Naomi is 10 and in 5th grade…and had to do a similar project recently…..She told me it would be awesome to take someone to a Reds Game, Bengals game, the zoo, Findlay Market and Union Terminal…plus eat at Skyline and Graeters!
I think she is right! A friend date for me would include a hike through a fun park (French, Alms, Ault), visiting the Cincinnati Art Museum, or learning at the Holocaust and Humanities Center at Union Terminal, going to a FCC soccer game and eating at Brown Bear, ROOTED and Abigail Street. Let’s throw in some shopping along Vine Street too!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Top of the list is my favorite person, my best friend, partner and husband Jake Hodesh! There is a special group of married couples who actually work together and somehow we manage to do it!
