Meet Monique Wormerly | Loctician/Natural Hair Stylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Monique Wormerly and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monique, what is the most important factor behind your success?
My success stems from being honest with my clients and using my education to help them find solutions to their hair and scalp issues. Many locticians are just in the industry for the money. They often ruin their clients locs by allowing the client to do whatever they want to their locs without giving them a proper consultation and by not being truthful about the condition of their locs. Many locticians lack proper hair chemistry education and theory and treat everyone’s locs with the same care, regardless of whether or not that care pertains to that specific client. It’s my goal to provide specific solutions for each individual client.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I went to Northwest Career Center for Cosmetology in high school. I always loved doing hair, but I decided to go to college and get a corporate level career instead of becoming a full time cosmetologist. Over the years, I just used my hair skills to generate a side income while I was working for the school board. When Covid hit, I had to used my hair skills for income when the schools closed. Instead of going back to the schools when they re-opened, I decided to maintain locs and natural hair full time instead of going back to sit at a desk. I started with four clients, and could barely pay my booth rent. Flash forward four years and I have over 500 clients, created Monique Estell LLC, and have my own line of oils. I am also looking to go back to school to become a trichologist.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Columbus is a foodie town. We have a variety of 5 star restaurants to chose from. I would recommend the newly remolded brewery district or the Easton Marketplace for shopping, great food, entertainment, and family fun. The are surrounding OSU is also a bustling community with a little bit of everything for everyone.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My success is greatly in part to my mentor Carlisha Mullins. She has helped pave the way for my business by watching how she developed her own. She has shared valuable information with me in regards to business logistics and has shown me different ways that I can expand me brand.
